Savage Species is Broken?

Savage Species is very breakable and very dated.
Very few of the LA's make much sense and none of it was playtested.

If you haven't got a good rappore with your DM you can't really play a in a game based on something that is that imbalanced in a normal, balance oriented, DnD game.

I have no problem with Savage Species -- We ignore LA so we play whatever the heck we want and screw the rules. :]

Can my Half Celestial, Half Dragon, Ogre Magi play in your game then?

Well if he's handling ditching LA the way I did do you think you could accept that the extra 4 outsider HD and 3 dragon hit dice would put you at 12HD which is equivalent to amember of a 12th level party and if they weren't that high yet you'd have to take the abilities spread out over several level increases as the party leveled up?

There are also a fair number of errors in the progressions that result in creatures that don't add up to what the final creature is in the MM. Make sure you check that if you want to use SS.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. It's not that every single troll in the world should be the same!

*lol* Sure, no problem. Just make sure to anticipate enemies matching your effective character level. :]

Let's see, Ogre Magi have 5 HD, let's throw a Fighter level on top of that and... Voila! I've got an ECL 6 character (Because you ignore the 14 LA). Woo! Bring on the matching challenges for ECL 6!

What I mean by ignoring LA is that we don't "charge" extra levels for being what you are. If a Gnoll starts with 2 extra hit dice and whatever, we don't make him take two levels of "Gnoll", nor do we force his xp to start at the 3rd level. He's still a level 1 whatever-he-is, but he's an EFFECTIVE character level of 3. That, of course, factors into the average party level. :)
