Savage Species Question

All,

If I was playing a Hound Archon, using the monster progression on page 178 of the Savage Species book, could I pick up class levels instead of monster levels? Example: At 4th level take a level of Paladin instead of a level of Hound Archon.

I don't think you can. Check out page 27 on monster classes and multiclassing where it says you must complete the full progression before choosing another class
