Savage Worlds = 4th edition Canada

In this example, Savage Worlds is more like 3.5 Canada for me. I still like 3.0 well enough to stay there--with my favorite d20 games like Omega World d20 and Judge Dredd d20, thank you very much. But, I am still pondering a 3.5 game in the far future after we finish our current 3.5 game because it is the game/rules-set the rest of my group knows & loves. I would prefer it in Savage Worlds, but I don't have the group support or the pre-painted minis for it. So, I guess it really is like Canada, too far, cold & friendless for me. No language barrier, though.

Well, being here in Canada I can definately tell you it's gone Savage!...

Haven't you ever watched Hockey?!?... ;)

Hockey Night in Canada is child's play compared to the Parliamentary Channel.

I'm far from appalled at much of what I've seen about 4e, but I'm still thinking pretty hard about using Savage Worlds for my next campaign anyway. I love the way it runs. I think it really lives up to its claim of "Fast. Furious. Fun."

I'm sure I'll still grab at least the 4e PHB and read it through. And who knows, I might change my mind. But I at least feel that I already have a great system "in my pocket" if I'm not wild about what I see.

Yeah, we've got some rough and tumble politicos. Chretien was always one to take matters into his own hands.

But we still don't hold a candle to India.

I am using the best of both worlds: Savage Pathfinder.

I may have moved to Canada, but I still visit the States.

Same here. The best game system around with best fluff around. (Best being my subjective opinion, of course.)

I'd agree with a few others, though. As much as I love to play and run Savage Worlds, from what I've heard of 4e, Savage Worlds is much more like it (or rather, 4e seems to have taken a fair number of pages from Savage Worlds' book) than 3x. SW reminds me a lot of B/X, too, for some odd reason that I've never been able to pinpoint.

Additionally, it shares many points with 4E that make 4E a turn-off for some, namely:
  • Very abstract damage (damage save-like mechanic)
  • NPCs and monsters are built-as-needed, without real rules
  • Mainly combat related magic system
  • Minions Extras
  • PCs are the stars and far above normal folks (Wild Cards)

I think D&D-derived games are a better "Canada", mainly Pathfinder.

Exactamundo!

Course, the thing about the analogy is that 4e is a movement, not a non-movement. So by staying where you are--3.5--the analogy of "moving" somewhere doesn't quite fit.

So much the better. I'll stay right here and the REST of you move to Canada!

Well, if I may be forgiven a slight bit of "pimping" here, those who are contemplating Savage Worlds for fantasy gaming might well enjoy Shaintar: Immortal Legends. One of the "quick pitch" phrases used for it has been "The Forgotten Realms of Savage Worlds."

That isn't to say the settings are the same, but only to suggest that there's a fully expressed and supported epic fantasy setting (complete with enhancing rules, bestiary, and a highly developed adventure creation system) ready-made for Savage fantasy fans.

If you check out the Shaintar Journal on the Talisman Studios site, you will discover massive amounts of free Worldbook material to look into. As well, the Treasures section has a lot of free material to take a look at.

Humbly submitted for your consideration in this discussion. :)
