Savage Worlds for Spelljammer

I prefer Star Wars Saga Edition for a Tactics/RPG take on Spelljammer (easier conversion, near-zero conversion for the material with a 3e rerelease) and Spirit of the Century for a different way of handling it.

Nonetheless, I can totally see using Savage Worlds, too. Definitely a better fit mechanically than any extant version of D&D.

Actually, I think Savage Worlds fits Spelljammer better than out-of-print D&D, too. Not familiar with Star Wars saga. But no D&D edition has really handled swashbuckling very well. Old editions handled the loose feel of it, but that whole AC thing got in the way. 3e fixed the AC problem with things like dodging and weapons finesse, but codified combat actions too much for the swashbuckling feel.

The fairly restricted skill and edge mechanisms of SW, together with the non HP combat system seems to handle swashbuckling quite well. And Spelljammer's a swashbuckling setting.

Saga is pretty much a liter, looser and much more MOVEMENT focused d20 variant. Easy to learn and use, with more tweaks to make it cinematic.

Offhand, I can't remember what, if any, combat actions were loosened up from feats in it, though.

Agreed.

Honestly, I think the next time I do Spelljammer I'll do it with Spirit of the Century. The tactical element in both SW and d20 (and in previous versions of D&D) has always felt clunky for the odd mix of confinement and mobility in Spelljammer ship-to-ship combat.
