Save My Game

The play style here is so alien to me I can't really quite wrap my brain around it. In various games I've played our PCs, the "heroes", have rushed headlong in to situations where there was a good chance some or all of them would be killed.

That's kind of what heroes are expected to do when confronted with Evil Maniac About to Destroy the City/World/Universe. Thwarting apocalyptic schemes by crazy megalomaniacs is part of the job description.

If the players are intereted in a more mercenary style game, the motivation should be changed accordingly. Still, not getting blown to bits along with the rest of the city should be pretty good motivation. I'm all for the "reluctant heroes" thing, but at some point the players have to take some kind of action (preferably something interesting) or the game will just turn in to a series of attempts to get help to try to stop the BBEG; in other words, not much goin' on.

Personally, I've always enjoyed having a few red shirts errr... guards along to make for a big, fun melee with explosions, lots of explosions.
