I think I've only tried to play Gnomes when I'm creating a ludicrous character. Gnomes lend themselves to the absurd, more so than other races.

Purpose? What purpose does an Elf have? or a Dwarf or a Halfpint?

Gnomes are mundane fey, in touch with the natural world around them, they understand its secrets and by enhancing mystery they maintain their power.

If you find them absurd or can not fathom their worth then the mystery has been maintained and their work has been a success

Gnomes serve as the pseudo-technomancers of D&D. Sure, it might be a little insane, but gnomes have always been an important part in my campaign worlds. They always will, too.

Purpose? What purpose does an Elf have? or a Dwarf or a Halfpint?

Elf = Idealised superhuman, everything people aspire to be. Beautiful, graceful, magical, clever etc etc

Dwarf = Gritty, down-to-earth tough guys. The secrets of the earth.

Halflings = The everyman. Not larger than life, normal folk trying to get past in a crazy world of magic.

That said, I like your idea of gnomes as mystery folk. It's a shame that (to me at least) that never came across in their racial write up in 3e.

Equally, I've only ever had two gnomes in my games, over the course of years. One was a spy, the other an engineer.
