Saving Throws for Spells - after the effect?

What exactly does "Saving Throw ends" in the spell description mean?

(E.g. Sleep).

Is there an effect before the saving throw (1)? Or does one have to make a succesful throw to end the effect?

1. Spell -> effect -> succesfull saving throw next round-> effect ends? or
2. Spell -> succesfull saving throw -> no effect

Thanks for help.

The former one.

Specifically, with sleep it goes like this.
1) Attack vs Will
2) If Hit -> target is slowed and at the end of its next round the target roll a saving rolls to remove the slow condition.
3) If it doesn't pass the save (usually roll 9 or lower), it becomes uncounscious too. At the end of its next round the target rolls a saving roll to remove the slow condition and also rolls to remove the unconscious condition.
4) If the initiall (vs will) attack miss, the target is slowed and at the end of its next round the target roll a saving rolls to remove the slow condition without risking to fall unconscious due to failed save roll.

Of course, the target will continue to roll save(s) at the end of each of it's rounds as long as it's affected by a "save-removable" condition.

There is a section in the combat chapter that tells you the exact order of how to resolve things. Andurs list is pretty good for a start.
(Maybe someone else can give you the page reference, I don't have my books available right now.)

There are a few exceptions for Saving Throws, but the general rule is, you save against each individual effect (that allows a save) at the end of your turn. This usually means you suffer the effect at least one round.
