Scandinavian Roleplayers!

I might be able to help you out as for Denmark...

I can probably not give you a precise picture of the roleplay status-Q in here in Denmark but I can give you my maybe outdated version.

Unlike what I experienced from roleplayers in Australia and USA (Florida) roleplayers in Denmark doesn't seem to belong to a certain group of people (It's a good thing to ask if someone roleplays... You would be surprised). I don't know if this has anything to do with the size of the population. (Only 5000000. Sidney alone has 8-9000000 citizens) You know, people being more open to things when they are happening around the corner and not somewhere downtown.. Figure of speach :)

I remember years back when I lived in Odense, center of Denmark, I played some live Vampire.... (I tried some live vampire in Australia and have heard a little about how it is played in USA (That siccor-stone stuff). This was very different). Some of the people who arranged it studiet for docter and had seeked for permission to use the... in Denmark we call it university but that would cause some confusion to call it that here... never mind. You probably know what I mean... The building was a cool place for that kind of game since they displayed skulls and other nice things in glassjars in some of the rooms. Not to mention the huge hallways with open levitated briges, many elevators etc. Often there was arrange for intertainment like live music or even a symbolic wedding once... Don't ask. It was held once a month and I can remember a count saying almost 200 participants- Many in cool costumes. Some of them went to filmschools to study costumemaking.

Now. I haven't been an active roleplayer for almost 2 years (Just haven't gotten around to it) but back then I can remember 3 Cons in a year. One of them gathered 3-400 people. Denmark is a small contry(You can get from one end to the other in less than a day) so people don't see distance as such a big obstacle. I also know many who don't mind traveling out of the contry to get to an arrangement. Also, as implied, it is easy to get permission to use a public place for a public arrangement.

If I should try and make a conclusion I would say that people more tend to see roleplaying as an innosent hobby. You won't get anymore raised eyebrows from saying you roleplay as an hobby than you do from telling that you play football or basketball. And if you wonder why I talk so much about live it's simply because I don't care for that live vs pen and paper crap. People here who play live also play p&p most of the time by the way. I have only meet a few people here who only tend to stick with one gamesystem. I don't really know if this is any differant from the rest of skandinavia but it might be of help anyway. By the way I know litteratly hundreds of roleplayers and about 40% of them are women. That does seem to be different from what I hear on these boards :P

Governments do that?!?

Well, here in Sweden they do, in a way. You can get subsidies for starting and having activities for young people, up to 25 year olds, I think it is these days.

You get about $200 and $4/member (below 25 yrs) every year. This money is channeled through the national roleplayers association, which also diverts money to other activities, Conventions, big LARP events, etc.

This is also a small and shameless bump! ;)

Ooh! Ooh! Me!

I'm from Sweden! I live in Gävle - or thereabouts, anyway; an obtuse crater of worms known as Sandviken.

I just thought I'd add some figures.
While it has dropped drastically since then, during the roleplaying boom in the mid-80's, one in four households had a roleplayer. Which translates roughly into one sixteenth of the population playing. Which, needless to say, is quite a lot, talking percentages. :D
Of course, the population of the entire country is smaller than that of NYC. So in terms of raw numbers, the market is quite small.

Sverok, that lovable organization, freely flings cash hither and yon, to the delight of roleplayers all over the country. Sometimes, like during the Roleplaying Endorsement Week last autumn, they also chuck free games at us (Complete set of Viking gamebooks).
Envy the Swedes. ;)

No kidding, I was born there, too many years ago! Haven't been there since -78, though. :o

Has it? I didn't know the official organ of Sverok had been revived. Good news! *rushes off to check*

Sadly not many people here in Gothenburg are members any more. It actually started here, under a different name. And then we had a nice gaming club with it's own downtown premises run by Sverok.

But that all crashed after the CCG rush. The premises were overrun by Tragic the Gathering hordes making all other sorts of gaming difficult. Moreover many of the MtG kids didn't waste their money on membership dues, rather than another booster.
So the local Sverok section went down in flames, and now the nearest headquarters are in a small town (Borås) a way off. And I don't know any member clubs around here any more!

(Anyway, I'm rambling OT! Sorry!)

But I like this thread, getting to hear what goes on around Scandinavia! Sad that Bondetamp isn't interested in hearing about what goes on in Finland, 'cause I am!
Is there still a finnish edition of RuneQuest for instance?

It's the same here. I've never suffered any kinda social stigma for playing RPGs and it's much more open, it ain't just geeks (although I'm a geek and damn proud of it too!).

Tell me about it.

I grew up in Sydney and could never get a girl interested in D&D.

When I moved to Sweden, I lived in Uppsala with my ex-wife (of course, back then she hadn't achieved "ex-" status.), and my first gaming group was comprised of 2 guys (a Spaniard and a Serbian - jävla invandrare, va?) and our girlfriends/wives + another girl for a total of 4 womenz - all Swedes. With the exception of Jose Luis (not the Serb, if you're wondering), all were newbies, so of course I was the DM.

I found the girls enthusiastic and resourceful gamers, but I guess Scandinavian women are pretty open-minded.

I hear you. I live in Gullmarsplan - 4 stops from Gamla Stan. It feels like I'm in there every day.

Just curious, I assume you go to Tradition in Gallerian. That place sucks! Everything's shrink-wrapped, so you can't stand and browse. So I've never bought anything there. There's a Tradition in Farsta which is fantastic. Huge range and you can actually look inside the books before you've bought them (or take photos of every page with your miniature spy-camera).

Henrix, what's your RL name (if you care to post it); I used to game at the SVEROK at Odensgatan or whatever (the SVEROK close to the Göteborgs- Posten office).

I was a MtG player, but I payed my fees all my time; it was crap that they had to leave the local :(

Henrix :D

Seriously, those who were around there who knew me, would know me as Henrix.

It has to to do with building a 2.4x2.4m model of the battle of Alesia and painting 250 romans (including a cute little I. Caesar) and about 800 gauls (15mm)*.

The model cluttered up the Sverok place for years afterwards.

But I wasn't at Odensgatan much. (Too many MtG players ;)) I was there a lot when it was on Magasinsgatan, prior to Odengatan.

* I didn't paint all of them. But I did paint all the Romans in less than two weeks. I didn't want to paint another sandal, ever!
