Scariest Monsters?

Yeah, people will gladly fight each other with massives peices of sharpened iron, but I think if anyone saw a goblin it would be so forign they'd be striken with fear.

I think for me it would be anything dead. Nice simple stuff like zombies or skeletons. Just turning around a corner and seeing something with the flesh falling off of it coming for me and knowing that it was already dead would probably cause spontaneous evacuation.

Edit: one reason I love Cthulhu and am reeeeeaaaally considering San points in my next campaign.

Without a doubt, I can say that the scariest monster, in my opinion, is the julajimus (MMII pg. 133). The monster description is scary enough, and the picture gives me the creeps, too. Needless to say, if I ever saw him doin' his thing in real life, I'd probably have nighmares for a while. I can honestly say that pretty much none of the D&D monsters scare me, but julajimus is another story. BTW, last Halloween, I ran a one shot adventure where the PC's were commoners, and a julajimus killed a kid in their villiage. They had to solve the murder. The players were pretty freaked too, not just me.

The chaos beast disturbs me on a fundamental level.

There are worse things than dying and the chaos beast is an example of that.

The devourer is a close second. No matter how a monster munchs or mauls you, death should be a release not the begining of the indefinite torture of your soul.

I'm gonna have to go with the Century Worm on this one. It's got the one-two punch on horror.

Gyaaaaah! Giant, toothed, worm-spewing, flesh-devouring evil thing is going to eat me!

...you know, that kind looks like a big wang...

Gyaaaah! Giant, toothed, worm-spewing, flesh-devouring evil penis is going to eat me!

In game, my experience has been that nothing scares a party so much as a rust monster ... my group beware!.

In real life ... giant spiders would send me into the gibbering willies. Anything more exotic is simply too horrible to imagine.

Here it is, the top 3 scariest SOB monsters:

3. Chaos Beast. A roiling, ever shifting devouring morass, intent on absorbing you into itself, or reducing you to just so much goo. Almost mindless, or at least so alien that there's nothing you can do. Yeah, I'd say thats scary. This is great if you're running a world similar to Warhammer, where Chaos is a cthonic destructive force intent on reducing the universe to flux.

2. Any undead. Any. From the humble skeleton to the terrible Nightshades, th undead tap right into our fears of death, and more than any other creature, they should not be. Worse, some of them are intent on tearing away everything you are, were and will be (neg levels and the Devourer). Characters should fear these things, and if you look at the Sanity section in UA, undead pack some heavy loss.

1. Mind Flayers. Fighting creatures with a base int of +8, Psychic powers and a tight organisation should be like fighting MJ-12 or the Illuminati, they're always one step ahead of you. And you have no idea what you're up against most of the time. They know what you're doing before you even ponder it, and when you finally come face to face with them, they turn out to be hideous alien horrors intent on cracking open your skull to get at the sweet sweet grey matter inside. And if you somehow get past their slaves and minions, they just fade away (w007 for Plane Shift!).

Beholder

I can't even begin to grasp the sort of environment that would evolve such a critter...

To me, it is much more outre than the others

Probably explains why they don't appear in my games ;)

Hmm, to my players:

1) Nightwalkers. Three of them recently crushed a Holy Avenger and a Sunblade...(I'm a vile evil DM!)

2) Great Wyrm Red Dragon. One of those knocked at the door of the party's keep to collect his taxes :]

For me:

1) Atropal (ELH). The picture of that monster ist just strange.

2) Nightcrawler. The character is most likely swallowed and dies of level loss...

3) Flesh Jelly (MM2). Urgh!
