Scarred Lands...What should I buy first?

I already own the Gazeteer and I wanted to know what I should buy next, in order to get a better feel for SL. I am eager to read more!

Thanks,

The standard answer would be Relics & Rituals, since it is a good book that you can use even if you don't like the setting.

Since you seem to like the setting, though, and have the gazeteer, you could do a lot worse than picking up "The Divine and the Defeated". It gives a rather complete run through of the pantheon of gods, titans and demigods and, IMHO, give a very good gist on the "feel" of the game. :)

If you are intersted in the Scarred lands I would also have to recommend Relics & Rituals. It has a lot of flavour text and an excellent section on ritual magic.

If you do pick this up though make sure you stop by the Sword and Sorcery website to get the errata. It contains general corrections as well as Magic item creation costs. The missing magic item costs were one of the few complaints that reviewers had about the book and now it has been remedied. :)

If your more interested in gods than in magic then pick up the Divine and the Defeated.

If monsters are your thing you may want to consider grabbing Creature Collection 2: Dark Menagerie. It is quite the improvent over the original.

That's all folks.

I apologize if I didn't help you narrow down your choices much.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking about those two books but I'm still not sure which one first.

If Nightfall is out there...some input if you have a moment.

Thanks.

It really depends. If you want a good gaming book that also has some info on the Scarred Land, then go for R&R or CC2. These books can be used more or less completely unaltered in almost any campaign. If your main objective is to get the feel of the Scarred Land, and your less worried about being able to use it if you don't find the campaign setting to be what you're looking for, then Divine & Defeated is absolutely stellar. I'm a KoK fan, but was very tempted to go for SL after reading that book. :)

There are books that I haven't read, though, so I don't have a complete overview. Nightfall or any other similarly devoted fans might give better, or at least better informed, advice. :)

If you are less worried about it being useful anywhere, either of the two city books Mithril or Hollowfaust would be excellent. Hell, with a bit of work you could probably plug them into another setting.

Both of these give a feel for what life is like in the Scarred Lands.

Ask and ye shall recieve.

Well having the Gaz is a good start. Now as to what you should pick up, there are number of choices, which mainly depend on two factors. 1) Do you forsee yourself running Scarred Lands? 2) What percentage of the money you spend on RPG products do you see yourself spending for SL prodcuts?

If you say yes to the first and only consider about 15-35 percent, then I suggest you get Relics and Rituals and then add Creature Collection 1. This way if you wants to RUN but only want mininal understanding of the Scarred Lands, this is the way to go.

If it's MORE than that, Then R&R AND add the the Divine and the Defeated. You might want to add the Wise and the Wicked too, but definately the first two. This way you get ALL the necessary components of what the Gaz offers AND add to some of it understandings.

I hope that was helpful.

BUT I DO more than recommend GET THE SL DM's SCREEN! It's ESSENTIAL for any good SL DM to have.

The DM screen is awesome, I would recommend picking it up. It has everything a DM will need in the middle of an adventure and the companion book is full of good stuff as well.

My vote for what to pick up after R&R would be Hollowfaust: City of Necromancers. It is a very detailed city setting within the Scarred Lands that can provide many nights of adventure for a little bit of cash. It also details some of the surrounding areas within Ghelspad.

The way it will probably happen is that you will have all of the SL products within the next few months. They are that good.

good luck - Ed Bourelle

Thanks for the support Ed! :) I'm glad to know we have publishers like you out there interested in what the Scarred Lands have to offer.
