Buttercup, there was an article in National Geographic last January about dogs which talked about that. ("Wolf to Woof, The Evolution of Dogs", Jan 2002). Pretty cool.
Dogs, though, have been with people for much longer than cats. "About 12,000 years ago hunter-gatherers in what is now Israel placed a body in a grave with its hand cradling a pup."
I've got my parent's copy of that issue because it has some coverage of a ruined castle in the Gobi Desert called Kharo Khato (The Black Castle). But I digress...
