Will advancement really be quick enough in D&D4e that character will already be of the paragon levels by October? Or are they figuring that people will want to try out the paragon mechanics and might want an adventure to help them along?

Hmmm....

Well, H1 is out in May, H2 is out in July, and H3 is out in August. After H3, the PCs should be 10th (11th?) level. That's 5 months.

I really hope all these adventure paths are well writen, I'll have very little time to prepare at that time and they will be a godsend for me if they provide decent adventures every few months.

I would guess it's the latter. I believe that they don't want to wait to have published examples of a Paragon adventure and how it varies, thematically and mechanically, from a Heroic Tier one.

Hmmm.... indeed. :)

I think both is possible. If the advancement is similar to 3.5 (and indications are that it is slightly faster even), getting to 11th level till October should be possible.

We're running 5 different campaigns in our group, playing once a week (~6-9h per session) I think it has been a bit more than half a year since we're running Savaga Tides, and we are at level 9 or 10 by now. Should be possible to get to level 11 from June to October.

But for groups that don't run that often/long or have a similar amount of campaigns going on, it's probably more to have the option of starting at paragon level.

Better to have a spare tire before you need it than wishing you had once when you have a flat. Whether they think any significant percentage of the player base will be at Paragon level, better to have the adventure out before they get there then after, when it isn't needed.

And yes, there are always people who play a bunch of times a week or who start at mid levels (or who have a jump-start in levels cause they were playtesters) who will be paragon or beyond by then.

Well, characters don't need to be Paragon levels by October. Part of the reason for releasing it then might be to give DMs time to find it, purchase it, read it through a few times and mentally prepare themselves for running it (even going to the extent of grabbing minis for the monsters in some cases). Releasing it in October makes it much less likely that any campaigns will be stalled by the DM not having the next module ready.

I'd much rather that than turn up to the weekly game for the DM to say "Ok, you made 11th level last week, which is good timing, because I picked up this adventure in the shop yesterday. I haven't had the chance to look at it yet, but I'm sure it'll be fine."

If D&D4e is so easy to run and as balanced at all levels as the designers claim, adventures being ready to run after a quick read may not be so far fetched....
