Screen Actor's Guild Awards

Anyone see them? I missed them (well... I didn't even know that they were on), but my parents saw 'em. RotK apparently picked up Best Picture, however during the speech, Astin apparently got all preachy about something. My parents couldn't remember what he was talking about though.

Anyone see it?

I didn't see it, but I saw the list of winners. Evidentally one of the guys responsible for some of the Enterprise Ads won one for best Promotion.

Sean got "preachy" about unions, and the power of the Screen Actors' Guild (which is the big actors' union), and how it can improve films and filmmaking.

Kinda strange timing, admittedly, but it only bothered me because he wasn't focused on LOTR.

SAG is basically a labor union for actors. So, if Sean got all preachy about the union, basically his speech is for the union members.

And I don't think it is the Best Picture but the Best Cast Performance in a Motion Picture that ROTK picked up an award for. It is an equivalent and an indicator of the Oscar's "Best Picture" category. They've yet to add Best Cast Ensemble.

Personally, being the best single actor/actress is good, I pay more attention to the cast whose teamwork performance can make the best damn movie.

Exactly. No matter how good an actor or actress you are, it doesn't do much if there's a lot of conflict.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Johnny Depp beat out Murray and Penn for SAG's best actor.

Also, I'm at a bit of a loss with Astin's comments. I understood that he was agreeing with Tim Robbins' desire to see more productions return to the United States. The belief being more job opportunities here rather than going overseas. But, given he just starred in a multi-million dollar production filmed for a number of years in New Zealand, well.....it was just fascinating the speech coming about.

I think we let their celebrity status clouded us from the fact that SAG is not just a union for celebrities but also for all actors, however lesser known they are. I recalled the time when SAG did went on strike and some of us complained about the celebrities wanting more money but it's not that, it's the lesser known actors that are union members who are working on pay scale.

What Sean Astin mean to say is that if productions are done in the US, whether they are high-budget or low-budget, pay-scaled actors can find employment.
