PrintScreen and pasting into Word or MS Paint will grab the whole screen. ALT-PrintScreen will grab just the window with focus allowing you to paste it into Word or MS Paint. Are you looking for something with a few more features than that?

CaptureWiz has a free trial, I'm not sure how long it is for. Lot's of people here in the library use it.

If you're talking just 2d Windows elements, then I would go with the alt-printscreen or ctl-printscreen native to Windows like IronWolf suggested.

If you're looking for capturing video or 3d games, I would recommend http://www.fraps.com/
