Scroll Creation

I have a question about creating a scroll. Can you create a scroll with more than one spell on it in 1 day as long as the GP cost is under 1000 gp? Someone on the Wizards boards said that yes it was in the DMG (adds 1 foot to the scroll per spell), but I couldn't find it. it would seem to make sence to be able to throw 3 or so low level spells onto one scroll and scibe it all in one day. I mean one first level CLW spell onto a scroll shouldn't take 8 hours, should it?

Any insight would be welcome!

I can't find the rule either. My group used to use the maximum of 1000 gp to determine how many scrolls could be written in a day.

We found this to be unbalancing, as scrolls are supposed to be last-ditch items when you run out of spells.

And the SRD says:

Creating an item requires one day per 1,000 gp in the item’s base price, with a minimum of at least one day.

So we're going "by the book": maximum 1 scroll per day, 1 spell per scroll.

But by the book could also mean the next spell would be 75% the price then 50% after that and so on per adding other simular abilities to a magic item right. So a Scroll of 3 Cure light wounds would break down:

First CLW 1st level 12.5GP 1XP
Second CLW 1st level 37.5 GP 3XP
Third CLW 1st level 25GP 2XP

And so on till you reach 1000 GP.

That is 1 scroll with 3 spells on it in one day but under 1000 GP, straight from the book.

Could this also be right? Why would it take 3 days to scribe a scroll of 3 Cure Light Wounds at first level. Makes no sence to me.

There is no explicit allowance in the rules for creating scrolls with multiple spells and having that reduce the creation time -- the only hard rule is the "1,000 gp per day, minimum 1 day" rule.

However, many people point to the fact that the DMG does list scrolls with more than one spell on them in the magic tables (p. 204). It seems highly reasonable, then, to allow scrolls with multiple spells and spend time for the whole item as one unit.

Scrolls certainly do not follow the "new item" suggestions for adding similar powers. They follow the hard-and-fast rules for scroll pricing per spell that appear repeatedly in PHB p. 78, DMG p. 245, and DMG p. 200-203.

I think that it is reasonable to allow multiple scrolls to be scribed in a day so long as they don't exceed the 1,000 GP limit. But I wasn't totally comfortable with the concept that a character could conceiveably scribe 40 first level scrolls in a day.

The house rule we decided on is that you can scribe a number of scrolls equal to your primary spellcasting stat, so long as the total value doesn't exceed 1,000 GP. This has worked smoothly so far.

40 first level spells on one scroll? Isn't there a maximum number of spells that can be on one scroll? I don't have any problem with allowing multiple spells per scroll... but there has to be a maximum there SOMEWHERE.

What is the maximum number of spells per scroll that can be generated by the scroll generation tables in the DMG? If I remember correctly, I think it's 3.

How do you explain that per the tresure rolls (and most published adventurers) you can have up to 6 spells on a scroll, then?

Me, I allow up to 1000 GP of spells less than 1000 GP in price each to go on one scroll. But I've always hated the one magic item per day limit.

Also, you shouldn't offer any discount for secondary powers on scrolls. Unlike wonderous items, rings and such, scrolls should just be priced from the formulas IMHO.

I can't explain it :)

Therefore, it's house rule territory. I'm just saying that for us, it became obviously overpowered to have 20+ scrolls available to our wizard and sorcerer (each). Yeah, they are low-level, but Invisibility and Mage Armor go a long way.

Her is what Wizards say s about it, I guess it now comes down to house rules:
My question is this. Can you create one scroll in one day with more than one spell on it as long it is doesn't exceed 1000 GP in price?

No.

For example:

1 scroll of :

Cure Light Wounds (1st level caster) 12.5 GP 1 XP
Bull's Strength (3rd level caster) 75 GP 6XP
Wieldskill (1st level caster) 12.5 GP 1XP

would cost 100 GP 8 XP and only take 1 day to scribe as it is one scroll and under 1000 GP.

Is this correct? Or is it 1spell per scroll per day. Thanks.

No, it would take a minimum of one day for each spell scroll.
Though your DM is certainly allowed to rule otherwise.

Sincerely,
