Scrying is Fooled by-?

First Post
Couple weeks ago I sent off one of the NPCs to die. I need a little help understanding what I saw and I think I have been duped.

I need to know if there are any spells that can defeat Scrying (this question is directed for 3.0e D&D, not 3.5e) with an illusion, that could make the Scrying mirror reverberate from the power (or is this just a GM trick, which I am assuming- more then likely to keep me from teleporting in, grabbing the victim and porting out again).

In any case that’s what I need- this is the long of it.

The Company has a map that a mage by the name of Sylar, The Crimson (he’s Scarlet Brotherhood). We’re trying to gain allies and power to take him on at the time, when we come across a monk that appears to be about or higher then 13th lvl (note we’re 7th to 8th lvl at this point). She is watching the road we’re on. We try to take her alive before we realize her level, she kicks some kester then flees- trying to get the info of where we are away I presume.

I ass/u/me that because there are lots of ways to we’re we’re going and I have been pretty good about keeping an eye out for Scrying that they either have lots of 13th+ lvl monks out there or they just got lucky. So my plan changes.

We get word from one of our allies that something is gonna be happening in Narwell, where we are near.

Not wanting to lose the map (its tattooed to our monk’s head, under her hair) should we lose a fight, we flee.

Within the group there is a lot of- anger (kinda not the right word, but works for right now) about fleeing from a fight (the leader (my character) and the monk- both of whom are directly hunted by Sylar are both very much into the idea of running). So reluctantly I agree to leave our War Priests cohort behind to gather info on what’s suppose to transpire in Narwell. Communication is set up using Message and Scrying as well as a daily Sending (both will start a week from the day we last see him).

The group hunts up into the Yatil Mountains were there is suppose to be a sister monastery to the one that gave the map/tattoo to our monk (her’s was wiped out- completely).

The Sendings are dead air; there is no response from the Sendings.

Scrying reveals that our friend is in a darkened place- a cave perhaps. Dark vision scroll burned and I see that he’s there, but I can’t tell if he’s alive. Then color (red) comes into the Scrying and a feeling of old and ancient power comes into being, this is something that scares the wizard (made DC 25+ Will save). Party members watching the mirror (they can’t see the Scrying, just the mirror) see that it’s reverberating, like something is shaking the mirror. That is brought to my attention and the Scrying is Dispelled.

Our contacts are contacted and we are informed that our friend went below Narwell seeking “The Lord of The Scarlet Tide.”

I am certain that what we knew is now what they know- namely where the map is and that our friend is dead or soon to be. We can’t get to him in time and we can’t leave our present location without- well that an entirely different line of thought and a different story.

The question remains- I know that there is an illusion spell that can defeat, or is meant to defeat Scrying, but what is the name of it, and if any of you have suggestions those would be nice to hear (read) as well.

Thanks for your time, and I will try to be patient this time in waiting for a response.

I think you might be looking for the 8th level spell screen. Although it looks like the DM has taken some liberties (which is really cool, if you ask me).

I was actually going to suggest that the DM might have been looking at on of the BoEMs. But I'm sure Monte would have thought of that...

The GM loves BoEM. You have any suggestions as to what he might have used from it?

I think Screen (from PHB) is a good place to start. Of course knowing this GM and where he's headed with the cohort's boss- it might be a demon lord and there is no illusion. :(

The DM looks like he's taking some liberties with the rules, but not in a bad way. In fact, I would assume he's doing so in order to save your sorry behind from a situation you can't possibly deal with!

That being said, the Underdark in various worlds often has a "magical fuzzing" effect that prevents long-distance teleportation and perhaps scrying magic as well. This goes all the way back to the "D series" of modules by Gary Gygax (primarily concerned with chasing drow). The drow in the Forgotten Realms even has some "plop-plop-fizz-fizz" name for the effect. So the most mundane explanation is that you are simply on the edge of such an effect.

I think the first option is most likely, though.

No, it just remember that there was a bunch of messing with scry spells in the second one. But I actually think I was thinking more of the messing with teleport ones in the first book.

He mentioned that the Underdark has a number of metals or ores which blocked or made porting difficult and scrying a pain, so you are correct there.

The War Priest is on his way out, so if his cohort dies there is no skin off his nose- thou my character looks pretty bad as a leader for getting one member killed and driving off our only Cleric.

I would rather have the cohort saved, or at least have the chance, but that seems unlikely with with's happening else where that we're involved with.

Thanks for your thoughts, they help.

lord of the scarlet tide eh?.........sounds familiar to me :D

Not sure if he created the name or if its something he pulled out of a book. He's really good at intigrating information with things he makes up.

If anyone knows the source let me know, I might want to find out some info on them :D Okay, so I really wouldn't, but....
