Then how do we know if we qualify?
If you qualify you'll be given the mission at some point during the adventure. They're not secret as in you'll have to find them in the first place. You'll be automatically assigned the mission by some NPC.Then how do we know if we qualify?
Note that there are 2 types of missions:Not quite what I meant. What I'm thinking of was in the Oubliette adventure (outside Mulmaster, I believe? ) One if my first adventures with my Emerald Enclave tempest cleric. I didn't know about secret missions. I figured it was like Pathfinder Society where ine regularly gets such things. And the NPC didn't really indicate it was secret. So I pretty much told everyone I needed the McGuffin for the EE to examine. Got 2 renown for it. So was that the "secret mission " for the purpose of being able to advance in the EE? The DM said nothing about it.
Is there a list of secret mission adventures somewhere? I think I have run one, but I'm not sure it was presented as such, so I don't know if it counts. I'm Rank 3 in Emerald Enclave.
I wouldn't say that as a generalization. Some are like skerrit describes while others can be done on the fly without any real extra work while doing the standard stuff the adventure asks you to do anyway. Having now done all Harper/Gauntlet missions and seen some Zhent/Lords missions, the split seems pretty even. Some are even easier than some assignments.Faction Assignment = Something small your faction asks you to do. Happens about every other adventure. Usually gives you 2 renown.
Faction Secret Mission = Additional encounter, often includes a risk of death. Happens once/season/tier (excluding tier 1). Usually gives you 2 renown and a secret mission success.
I believe they're called "special missions" in the modules by the way, not "secret missions". Might help to clear up some of the confusion.
