Secret missions in AL

Not quite what I meant. What I'm thinking of was in the Oubliette adventure (outside Mulmaster, I believe? ) One if my first adventures with my Emerald Enclave tempest cleric. I didn't know about secret missions. I figured it was like Pathfinder Society where ine regularly gets such things. And the NPC didn't really indicate it was secret. So I pretty much told everyone I needed the McGuffin for the EE to examine. Got 2 renown for it. So was that the "secret mission " for the purpose of being able to advance in the EE? The DM said nothing about it.

Note that there are 2 types of missions:

1. The more common one that just give an extra renown, which can appear in all tiers

2. The secret missions that count for faction advancement, which can only appear from T2 onward

People seem to often confuse these two. In case of the later the adventure specifically mentiones when a character should note the completion of a special mission as opposed to merely gaining an extra renown.

In either case there's no mechincal reason to keep them secret from the other players at the table. From an RP point of view one might not want a Zhentarim to know about Harper business, but the goals of either the extra renown or real special missions are never putting the factions against each other. It's always possible for all sides to reach all their goals.

Sharing your special mission might be your best way to accomplish it (e.g. the heavily armored Order of the Gauntlet member asking the sneaky Harper bard to complete his "steal some documents" secret Gauntlet mission for him)

Is there a list of secret mission adventures somewhere? I think I have run one, but I'm not sure it was presented as such, so I don't know if it counts. I'm Rank 3 in Emerald Enclave.

Yes there is a list out there that has Secret Missions and Items found for each module currently available. It doesn't look like it has been updated past DDEX3-7 yet though.

Faction Assignment = Something small your faction asks you to do. Happens about every other adventure. Usually gives you 2 renown.

Faction Secret Mission = Additional encounter, often includes a risk of death. Happens once/season/tier (excluding tier 1). Usually gives you 2 renown and a secret mission success.

I wouldn't say that as a generalization. Some are like skerrit describes while others can be done on the fly without any real extra work while doing the standard stuff the adventure asks you to do anyway. Having now done all Harper/Gauntlet missions and seen some Zhent/Lords missions, the split seems pretty even. Some are even easier than some assignments.

I believe they're called "special missions" in the modules by the way, not "secret missions". Might help to clear up some of the confusion.

While there was some confusion at the start of the campaign (since originally in other campaigns they used special mission), secret mission is actually the correct wording. (see page 21 of the ALPG).

That should not be the case. When writing, all the secret missions are supposed to have an additional encounter or encounter feature that carries with it the potential of a fight or could instead be much harder to succeed in than a normal faction assignment (which is where you often do something related to what the mod asks you to do).
