I know of no reason that it would be necessary to make it so text cannot be copy and pasted on an iPad.

That's almost certainly a case of some default setting being enabled and them just not noticing/not bothering to change it.

and of course the biggie
Irritated at slow buggy ads that steal space and steal your attention? With Firefox you get a completely different Internet (I almost get a heart attack whenever I'm forced to browse using Internet Explorer!)

And what if it's Firefox that keeps freezing up your PC for no good reason?

My Firefox isn't freezing up my PC, thank you very much.

(And even if it did do that, say once a month, it would be an exceedingly small price to pay to not have to visit the las vegas of internets)

Perhaps it's time for your yearly Windows reinstall?

Alas, mine is, and rather more frequently than once a month. I would suspect a virus, but that's redundant - it's a Windows 8 machine. :)

This is certainly true - see above.

I can copy/past on Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox, but not on Opera. I don't have Chrome, so I cannot test it there.

But I cannot print or convert to pdf on any of them (usually stops after the first page).

Adding "-webkit-user-select: none;" to prevent text selection is not a default. It is ghetto DRM.

It is deciding to break a basic behavior of the Internet (see also scrolljacking) for no benefit to the user.

What if I wanted to share a passage that I liked on social media? I can't.
What if I wanted to copy some text for use in a game that I'm running online? I can't.
What if I wanted to copy/paste and make a PDF of the content since you can't reliably print out the magazine? I can't.

(And before folks start pointing out that yes, you can do those things with non-Webkit browsers, I'm talking about people at large being able to do these things.)
