seeking a character class

Is there a character class out there that has the good BAB but is restricted to simple weapons? I have this idea for a crossbow user in my campaign, but except for special situations (going prone and firing, firing 2 crossbows at once) it is hard to find a mechanical reason not to just take a bow. And while I could just deliberately take the crossbow for roleplaying reasons, it would be nice if there were a class out there that gave up martial weopon profs and gave something else in its place (free rapid reload?).

Were I going to do something like that, *after* sufficient DM-begging, I'd come up with a variant of the Fighter-Kensai variant from Dragon # 310.

If you don't have that issue, you're proficient with all simple weapons and light armor, and one martial or exotic weapon. With that weapon, you get a +1 to hit and damage at 1st, 5th, 10th, etc. levels. You give up a bonus feat at first level, and have a bouncy skillset (Tumble, Balance, Jump, etc.). It's quite nice, and my anthropomorphic tiger took eight levels of it to get into a modified Blade Dancer PrC; I still toy with taking another two levels of fighter-kensai to get up to +3 to hit & damage with his bastard sword.

Since you're giving up that proficiency and focusing on a simple weapon, and a suboptimal one at that, I'd suggest being proficient with medium armor and shields. Also, look at the Targetteer's special abilities if you have that issue, and you can take those in place of feats.

Try to make a deal with your DM that you can build bolts similar to Cadderly... or these screaming bolts. Houserule crossbows to 1d20 damage.

Check out Destans storyhour for the bard there.
