what if i want to make a functional wereboar PC? what i get using MM rules is a steaming pile of crap. 1 lvl wereboar fighter is ECL 7. he is a real disgrace for his level. any variant rules for lycanthropes out there?

Curse of the Moon, by Sean K Reynolds, is a 3.5 d20 product specifically devoted to playing lycanthrope characters that don't have a huge amount of natural Hit Dice and level adjustments that bog the character down. It may be what you're looking for.

Paradigm Concepts also released Slaves of the Moon, which is a sourcebook on Lycanthropes. However, it's not as good as Curse of the Moon with regard to character building.

thanks a lot, guys. i actually managed to locate and look through the books and i definitely liked some ideas. reynold's lycanthropes with +1 LA and no monster HD seemed less powerful but still fun to play. on the other hand creators of wereboar template from the Slaves of the Moon seemed to use core mechanics but added 3 HD and +2 BAB to the creature - don't think that simply bolstering a monster solves all balance issues.

Animal, you might also want to try the wereboar class progression on the WotC website (scroll down the page). It breaks the template down into a class with level progressions, letting the wereboar gain power over time. That might be just what you're looking for.
