Self-Mutilation Powers

Further/faster/more is a little different than, WHOOMP, I have a super power. No, there's not any really good reason why the magic would only work when you're scared. Running and noticing things are stuff I do all the time, and the baseline for D&D is that when I'm in a challenge situation, my stats reflect my adrenaline-charged abilities. Strongly instinct-driven behavior is just not something you see in higher mammals anyway.
Erm you do realise your playing in D&D land an ability which turns you invisible on reflex sounds very reasonable to me, and for that reflex to be pain or damage or a scare sounds right, bit like a feinting goat who goes stiff as a board when scared and I doubt a goat biting itself feints.
With animals in real life who can change colour on reflex, is it really that much of a push that in a world where balls of fire can be summoned and thrown, where gods act through mortal servants to blast foes, that a reflex reaction for a creature may be invisibility.
