Thanks for the props to Bluffside and The Hunt: Rise of Evil settings even though they were not listed at the beginning :D .

The Hunt will be getting bigger and better in 2004--look for it.

I looked through Ghostwalk while my husband was rummaging through Borders the other evening, and my suspicions were confirmed--it really isn't my cup of tea. However, that doesn't mean it's poorly done.

Given that you are interested in it, Joshua, I'd say go for it. But really, I think you should give Hunt: Rise of Evil a thorough examination before you decide. It doesn't have four color interior art. So? It's got solid ideas. It has that 'just different enough' feel that you are looking for. And they even included Freeport and Bluffside on the world map, so you could always seque into those (excellent) settings should you desire. Heck, you could even mesh H:RTE with Ghostwalk. For that matter, you could quite easily stick the city of Hollowfaust in the H:RTE setting. I think a city of necromancers would fit right into that world.

Keep us posted on what you decide!

Actually, we've got a Hunt: Rise of Evil in the group already -- currently the book is sitting on my shelf, although it'll go back to the original owner in August/September.

Really the reason I asked about those two campaigns specifically was because I was interested in them and wanted to know more about them. There are a lot of other good settings out there, but for the most part, I either already own them (or some of their material, at least) or am pretty familiar with the concept, having followed discussions on them for some time. I'm kind of surprised, really, that Ghostwalk seemed to have arrived without making much of a splash at all -- I'd have thought starstruck fans of the writers would at least have posted something on it.

And Unapproachable East seems like an interesting take on FR -- a setting that otherwise only mildly interests me (at best).

Both are pretty good. My reviews to RPG.net and OgreCave are coming.

Both are heavy on crunch.

Both are different than standard campaigns. Unapproachable East does update a lot of FR material like the boxed set and FR 6. Lots of PrCs, feats, spells, monsters. Regional information is brief but enough to work with. Reason it's breif is because it covers a lot of territory and provides a lot of general ideas on different things. For example, I'd probably do something with the Shou, who are here from the Tugian (Mongolian) War. Combine this with Nyambe and you'll have a campaign that has just about every ethnicity.

Ghostwalk has it's own city and can be used in any campaign so it can go into almost any setting. The whole ghost aspect is a litlte weak in places but for that type of campaign, can work well.

I've got to admit that lately, the SL haven't looked too good.

I was heavily into it and I think a lot of that was the level of support, even though I didn't always agree with the books they made.

Now with the 3.5 material coming down the line, maybe it'll be time to start up again, but the FR stuff of late has been exceptional so it'll be a toss up (hence my poll on another post.)

One thing I do like about Ghostwalk though is that it's portable and I was considering using it as a place where the Necromancers from a few of the other locals like Hollowfaust and the Secret College could meet and discuss the implications of that strange portal.
