Sell me on creating new d20 fantasy PDFs . . .

Hey there...

You craft some great products. I say craft rather than something else because you put a lot into what you do and it is obvious by the measure of success and notoriety (boy did I butcher that word) you have achieved.

That being said, I'll echo what others have said in that a product that just details new spells or equipment or even a new character trick or two, while fun and helpfull to those that don't have the time to create such a thing, seems like it has been done and thus the problem that you are having.

Why not create something that will revitalize or envigorate d20 fantasy or at least your taste for it? There is a LOT of stuff out there for d20 fantasy. But how much of it is really usefull or even desireable. When products like..."Von Hiccup's Guide to Musk Rats" are the average faire of those that buy Fantasy PDF's ...I think we have either hit a ceiling or we have guppies trying to swim with the sharks. How many books on new feats or rules or mechanics about how to hold a pencil do we need before we realize that with every rule or extra dice role we burden an already complex system?

I think this is a great thread as more publishers should actively try to get in touch with their audience like this. You want to be sold on d20 fantasy? Craft something that we can all say ...."WOW" about. If you write just another product ...then it will join the other "just another" products out there. But if the product makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up... Most likely it will do the same to us too.

Some suggestions from a long time game addict with no publishing cred...

*Cloak and Dungeon: A fantasy Spycraft Treatment is a great idea... Why not do a product called Fantasy UNLEASHED where you take classic non-fantasy genre's like the espionage settings, and give GM's and Players alike the tools to bring their favorite flavors into the worlds of spells and swords.

* When GM's Attack A tool box to give GM's the basics of GREAT story telling and adventure design. A section to catapult new GM's into greatness would be helpfull too.

*You want Fries with that A series of side adventures and quests to beef up any campaign. We've all played in those adventures where a side quest was presented as possibly a leveling tool or something to break up the monotony of saving the 134th princess this year but the players just didn't bite because it didn't have the drawing power to pul them away from the main mission. Some good side dishes would be neat. ...Being hired to compete in an ariel race aboard magic carpets through a winding canyon while fighting it out in the air...Clues during the current adventure leads the PC's into sneaking into a wizard's lair to spoil the massive vat's of potion he has brewing that will infect the kingdom...or steal a sample while doing so to sell to the highest bidder...Did we mention the poisionous mage was a (insert nasty poison creature here...My pick was something creapy like the Yuan-ti) who created the poison from hsi own venom!... Finding the side room off the main vault where another team is hiding to steal the treasure from you once you've stolen it... This could be a fun product of mini-adventures and side quests to bolster that "so-so" adventure that only needed a little something.

*Shock and Awe Random encounter tables with full write ups that will thrill and kill the PC's. Goblin indirrect fire team supporting some bandits...Oh my...Nothing says loving like goblins with artillery...

*Monsterous Locales Monsters and lairs that make sense.

So just a few to tickle or treat. I hope you find your fantasy muse and that it kicks the other PDF Broker/Makers in the pants so that we will never see another "Magic Cod-pieces and their Uses!" type product. Good Luck!

Regards,
Walt

a product that just details ... or equipment

<begin soapbox>
I think there is a terrible misconception out there. I don't know how it happened or why, but the A Dozen series and many of Phil's other books are not equipment books.

If you look at any of the "Dozen" books that Phil writes they are adventure seed and campaign idea books. It just happens that they are linked to an piece or type of equipment.

Let's face it if Phil wrote equipment books he wouldn't write "A Dozen Unusual Bracers and Gauntlets" because he would only need 2 items.

A bracer.
A gauntlet.

Instead he has crafted rich backgrounds, links to potential plots as well as using and OGC from many sources to build on the larger d20 fabric.
</end soapbox>

Man-thing,

I didn't mean to imply his books were of one type or another... I like his stuff and have been a fan for some time (love the Superline stuff). My statement was about a trend that we see in many of the things that hit the "shelves" right now. It was meant as a very broad statement not pointing to any one publisher (least of all him). I am sure everyone posting on this thread enjoys his work and are here pulling for him to blast our socks off with the next big thing.

In your initial post Philip, You mentioned looking outside the gaming industry for new projects. What kinds of things are you looking to get into and will some of these projects see light as RPG projects also? Just curious...

Walt

Sorry Walt,

I do see a lot of people say that Phil just writes equipment books. I apologize for lumping you in with the broader generalization I've seen.

Doubtful, since it's most likely these projects will be ad design (and similar work) for larger (non-game) companies.

Really? Which product? Maybe it was just too niche.

The product in question is "A DM's Directory of Demiplanes".

It has 3 five star reviews at Rpgnow. I has 1 three star review from someone that couldn't put a coherent sentence together.

At EnWorld it has 2 five star, 1 four star, and 1 three star.

It is available in PDF, POD, and Hardcover from Phil.
http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=352&products_id=3558&

It was originally slated to contain 24 demiplanes, but as Phil and Michael got writing they ballooned to such a size that 8 went into the 1st book and 2 more volumes were planned but not written. It doesn't appear that they ever will be.

Phil, if you enjoy doing fantasy, I say keep doing it but in your spare time. If you only release half or even a quarter of what you normally did, at least then it won't interupt your other work and you still get more fantasy out there.

Agreed. Phil, I'm a huge fan of your work. Coincidentally, I spent yesterday reorganizing my PDF collection in order to make a database to make searching easier (yeah, I'm a big nerd), and a large portion of those were written by you. I would hate not having any new books from you to look forward to.

One thing I will say - I do buy fewer books and PDFs now than I did even a year ago, BUT I am willing to pay more for well-done, interesting and useful PDFs. I know that description is vague and subjective, and I have no idea of course if that carries over to any other consumers, so make of that what you will.

No appology necessary...S'all good. It is very cool to see a whole bunch of support like this.

Phil, I won't try to sell you on it because I don't believe you're wrong. I have given up trying to even make a profit on my products, and I am only going to work on products I'm willing to lose money on, and I will consider any and all money I spend on them as money lost, plain and simple. If I consider it as an investment I'll just get frustrated with the lack of return.
