[Sesame Street] Um...

People can see Snufflupagus? Sacrilege, I say! Blasphemy!

Way I hear tell, the guy who voices Elmo has taken over the show's entire direction, and is a high-voiced dictator who's responsible not only for the show's decline, but also for all that's wrong with the world today. At least, that's how a friend told it to me after seeing a documentary on Sesame Street.

As he said in a classic Simpsons episode, "Elmo knows where you live!"

What's next, Cookie Monster starting to go grey, getting a big gut, getting regular prostate exams, going bald and buying a hot red convertible as his mid-life crisis is explored on Sesame Street?
I'd start watching again.

Geez. Read around the 'net and you'll find people who are really upset about this; at least for the next 5 minutes anyway until they find something else to rant about. What's funny is these people probably haven't watched the show in years. They probably have no idea how much it's changed already. I was amazed at the difference between when I watched it as a kid and when I started watching it with my son. As I said before, it's changed with the times. And for the better. How else could it stay on for 30 years?

Something else to think about. In the South African version of Sesame Street, they introduced a puppet character would had contracted AIDS. Why? Because they South African has an extremely high population of people with HIV and AIDS. So they use SS as a means of teaching children about the disease and how to be tolerant of others who have the disease.

Now, I'm not comparing obesity to AIDS by any stretch of the imagination but obesity is a major problem in America. We are the fattest nation on Earth. Why not use an established character who only eats cookies and have him change his eating habits to include more healthy foods and less sugary treats? It teaches kids that they, too, can change their habits and start to eat healthier. It's just another example of characters on SS being used as learning tools.

Gosh. What habits did the South African muppet have to change?

No, don't answer that.

*shudder* Muppet love is not something we need to know about.

And back on topic, I have one simple problem with this. How will children learn the value of a cookie if that cannot see a big, blue thing devouring them like crazy?
