Setting Idea: Water Planet

Proposal:
a Fantasy setting based on a planet with 90% water.
Besides Merpeople, you could have a race of dolphin humanoids, underwater dragons....
Just a passing thought about how it could b cool.

With the sudden increase in books about water combat and ships this is a very good idea. I've been thinking about one like this. No huge continents, but chains of volcanic islands.

Ooo.. The Evil Aboleth, The Majestic Dragon Turtles, Masive Zaratans, Powerful Strom Giants, Vile Sea hags, Deadly Krakens, the Sinister Kuo-Toa, the Secretive Locathah, the Exotic Water Nagas, the Brutal Merrows, the Devilish Sahuagin, Fearsome Sea Lions, playful Nixies, Ferocious Tojanida, the Realy Lame Tritons, and the Regenerating Scrag.
Not to mention all the undead and constructs you could have.
Could be a good idea.

Although it's scifi, a good example of such a setting is in the RPG Blue Planet. Extremely detailed, with its own ecosystem and a few really interesting secrets. Worth taking a look at.

Hehe. You are about to be visited by at least two home brewers here soon regarding Aquerra (Nemmerle) and the other setting with land islands floating through the mist (don't recall the author at the moment). Good stuff, all of it. Anyone taking bets on how long before both post here? Within 15 posts is my guess.

I seem to recall at least one more homebrew which is based on archipelagos, but I can't recall.

Hmph Pirates of Dark Water anyone?

For those who have never seen it, it was a short lived cartoon (21 episodes) about three adventurers A Rogue, An Aristocrat adventurer and a lady fighter turned druid who are on a quest to gain thireteen treasures and defeat and evil invading force "Dark Water"

The show did a wonderfull job of portraying an alien enviroment, the watery world of Mer and was quite fun.

What was also neat is the people in the show weren't rehashed European looking sterotypes but something more Indonesian or Arabic/Chinese looking which I liked.

There was apparently an RPG book by Lee Acosta which I have never seen and Google has a cache of the ADND netbook.

Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Well, I think it's a stupendous idea...

Think about how people were clammoring for the prehistoric info after Discovery Channel did their dinosaurs/ancient beasts stuff. Now they're doing a water thing...looks sweet to me!

And then there's Final Fantasy X with all it's water imagery...makes me want to visit the facilities if I play it too long. :)

But one thing I would advise: A subaquatic campaign is a lot different than a nautical one. There's a big difference between pirates and ships and the underwater world. Those on top have no idea about what's below, and vice-versa.

In fact, I'd advise that the only non-water on the planet be large arctic and antarctic ice floes....that's the only place life can arise without flippers. ^_^

I can imagine campaigns...we don't need humanoid creatures. Just add levels to dolphins themselves. :) Play Killey Whale and Kraken PC's. It's fun, with fins. :)

I love the idea, but it is alien enough that it's tough to do from scratch without making up some new mechanics (like a swimming maneuverability, to compare with a flying maneuverability).

A very cool idea. Once you create your setting, you'll need to update us here about what you did.

I wonder what other strange settings people have done.

Like all underground or all extra-planar, etc.

Sounds like a poll to me.

I just want to give another "thumbs up" for Blue Planet. The section on "decompression for gamers" is worth $5 alone. Plus, the world map is -very- detailed giving the ocean depths. Just change all the sci-fi stuff to fantasy and you are good to go.
