Settings you want to like

Alright, so we've had least favorite setting threads and most favorites, but I've got a different question. Is there any campaign setting out there that you don't like but really want to? Is it just something small keeping you from enjoying it as a whole or something else? Are the novels the only thing turning you off of Dragonlance or is it Eberron's Lightning Rail that kills the setting for you?

The three things that put me off most of the settings out there are
Magic, dieties and technology.
Magic, theres either too much(high magic) or the impact of the magic isn't thought out properly.
Dieties, my biggest complaint about FR, is that the dieties seems so poor.
Technolgy, most settings seem to be at least medieval tech or higher. When i'd much prefer something more primitive.

Its Ravenloft for me.
I don't like horror novels, I don't like horror movies.
I've read the Ravenlost Setting and it has a lot of nice things....
...things I don't like.

I want to like Forgotten Realms so much... But I don't think it'll ever happen. There's tons of material for it, everyone knows a little about it, and so on, but there's things that just rub me the wrong way. I think mostly it's that there's so much magic in the setting and so many different deities. Not to mention the Harpers just creep me out.

Darksun.

Darksun is cool. I like it. 2nd Ed. Psionics were a nightmare. I might like it in 3E, but I never actually bought the setting, so I don't have it. So sad, its the setting I always wanted to play but never did. *shakes fists at psionics*

You might check out what they've done over at Athas.org. The material is free, and it makes use of the 3.5 psionics rules.

Dark Sun is one of those settings, like Masque of the Red Death, that works a lot better in a system other than D&D.

I think Dark Sun was more of an AD&D 2e setting, personally. Is that what you mean, or did you have another system in mind?

I really want to like the Forgotten Realms. The level of support from WoTC is high, and it seems to have the largest overall following. I also think that the production values are high for the supplements that I have leafed through. I guess I just didn't get into the setting early enough and now I don't feel like I can "catch up" with all of the information in the setting.

A tie for second is Birthright. I actually love the setting, but those names...
I cannot seem to get by the fact that a word might be spelled "poahffrjaw" but pronounced "Bill" ;) .

Dark Sun

Love the setting, have never seen useable rules for it.
I'm kind of hoping that I'll be able to kitbash D&D plus my conversion notes plus Iron Lore into something usable for Dark Sun, once Iron Lore is out.

*Starts crying...*

The Auld Grump, Birthright was my favorite TSR setting...

Birthright is WotC's strongest world. I love Birthright. But for me, the setting I would like to like, if it were ever possible, is . . .

You know, I'm confused.

Birthright. I really, really want to like Birthright.

*bing!!*

There I got my wish. I realy *do* like Birthright. Now if only a half-million other people did, it might be revived in some form...

Not going to happen, sadly. Too bad.

The only contact I've had with Birthright are a couple of the novels and the [largely-forgettable] Sierra computer game "The Gorgon's Alliance."

Every 6 months or so, I'll load it back up on my computer and try to play it. It had so much promise, and it just never materialized. I'll play, get tired of it, and remove it.

And yet, like clockwork, I'll load it up again.

I think I would've liked the real Birthright. :)

I'm with Eric on Greyhawk. There certain elements that sound great like the open design and low detail; however, the dieties are lackluster, the history is vast but scattered across a 100 different supplements, and there are some old published adventures from it that just set my teeth on edge.
