Oh yeah, that stuff is great for plot hooks. There are 3 of us that rotate Dming in our group and all of us use any piece of a character's history and actions that can affect game play. I had an elf once in a forgotten realms campaign that spent the night with a human in a town once and several years later after I became a wealthy adventurer, she shows up with junior, etc.
The most memorable, and argueably mean instance was during our Night Below campaign. My character had met, courted and married a young lady in Milbourne, since it was our base and the campaign takes a long time, you spend oodles of time there. Once, while we were well into the campaign, the Mind Flayers came to Milbourne while it was dark. We were down in the Underdark. The mind flayers captured my PC's wife, read her mind and found out that was our base. They wiped out the whole town, except for my wife and child. They eventually fled. We returned to the surface to find nothing.
