Sex and the Single Adventurer

I've had several campaigns, and several characters, where sex and/or romance had a role. usually it's one or more PC's pairing off; a few times it's been two PC's, sometimes it's been a PC and an NPC, etc.

Usually it's fairly casual. My main campaign world has an herb that is a very reliable contraceptive (and it even tastes good!), so the problem of leaving behind children rarely comes up. Sometimes it turns very serious, and marriage (or the equivilant arrangement) sometimes occurs.

Romance comes into play in our games, although we've always kept things tasteful. Discussion of whether a PC gets "laid" is discussed outside of game. The only time it comes up is when we find out that an NPC is with child.
It's always amazed me that we're not more open in game about this kinda thing, since we're almost entirely made up of guys!

I think that part of the reason that this can be (or usually is) an awkward issue is because a large number of groups are populated by guys.

In the end, however, it seems that it really comes down to each individual member of the group and how they collectively react to such situations. It may be theoretically good to address issues -- be they that of romance, or any other so-called isssue -- but one cannot reliably charge forward without taking group make-up into account.

It is times like these I don't know why I bother gaming.

I wouldn't worry all that much... there's a difference between language and intention -- especially through a text-based medium.

Perhaps more use of the proper emoticons?

This thread has inspired me...

In the next game my Fat Friar-type priest of Boccob is gonna go hit on the Priestesses of Istus. You just tell them it is destiny, and they love it.

I would say that the only time I would ever do something like that Onscreen would be if one of the participants was a Succubi (Or incubi, for that matter).

A little level-draining in the middle can change the encounter a long way.

I'd say lighten up, DG. ;) As long as it's only acted out in the game, it's fairly harmless...y'know, like GTA. :)

As for this, it honestly hasn't come up a whole lot in any campaign I've run. Though one female player did insist on playing a paladin (*cough*) of Freya, and got two others in on the action, that was when a female friend of mine was DMing, and I was a player. So aparently there were no real reprocussions from that (it's a bit different when the one who could get pregnant is a PC...it makes it difficult to adventure with a mewling spawn in yer gut, and our adventures usually don't have a lot of down time. :) Plus, adventuring and settling down usually don't mix too well).

For the NPC side of things...well, I've only had one character be actively interested in the sexual act of things, and he made a point to spend some gold on "herbal contraceptives," which, while not historically accurate, sounds good enough to me. :)

So it largely becomes a nonissue. Even if it did become anything, I'm sure it wouldn't be that big of a deal -- I'm sure orphanages are cramped with the illigitimate offspring of your usual adventureres, while your ususal Good Guy will either use the contraceptives or be happy with the kid. And STD's are only effective for so many levels before Cure Disease enters the frey...

I guess I've never been in so deperate need of a plot hook/that big of a Rat Bastard to dig that low. :-P
