Heretic Apostate -

So close it's not even funny. I didn't even remember that one 'till you brought it up. But since I'm insanley bored at work:

"Despite the fact that my weapons and armor are in desperate need of repair, I blow the entire reward on ale and ..."
-Skull

That'd make an awesome .sig.

The interesting thing I noticed is how often the males on this forum forget that there are women who read this board. And then they go off and say "oh no its a joke don't you have a sense of humor" and then next time I throw one their way and they get all offended. Isn't that a bit hypocritical? Its a joke? Don't you have a sense of humor? :p

You know, that's funny. We've pretty much had the same group that I am in since about 1989 or so. There are 11 of us, about 8 are regulars. We've got 1 gal in the group, who happens to be an ex of mine and is currently married.

This kind of talk comes up in and out of game.

She makes sailors blush. Many of the guys in the group get all red faced when they start something and she finishes it.

I love it.

Her husband happens to be one of them.

It really does show the occaisional double standard when one of the guys makes a 'randy' comment and she just jumps right in.

this thread COULD be an interesting discussion if you people could refrain from taking this stuff seriously and starting BATTLE OF THE SEXES XIV

Funny, but the only people I see trying to play battle of the sexes are the ones making little sexist digs, and then whining when anyone responds negatively because--we all know the line, say it with me, people--"It was just a joke! Lighten up, willya!" This isn't a board where the verbal equivalent of No Tagbacks applies, OK? Don't troll.

Sex comes up as a plot point in some games I'm in, or DM, but not to the point that we could be a Dead Alewives sketch. ("But if there are any GIRLS there, I wanna DO them!") It depends on the character and the plot in general, and it doesn't generally get roleplayed in any more detail than the aforementioned Foglio snippet.

All women are sexist then? And do they know you are their self proclaimed PR Officer? Nice to know, I should probably write that down somewhere.

It's rather disturbing, sexist men are evil, but sexist women get a laugh out loud. Yeah, that's true equality for ya.

Oh, all of us made these comments? Cite please. Anyway, I wouldn't have brought it up except for people making an issue of the comments you mention in the first place.

Two wrongs don't make a right, if their comments are horribly wrong and sexist then so is yours. *shrug*

From whom? Your gaming group? You should probably find new people to game with, then.

Somebody in my gaming circle who started a female PC with high Charisma, thinking she could simply manipulate every male NPC in the game by batting her eyes, would be in for a rude awakening. And this is a group that is almost entirely male.

I don't think that player would get any farther making haw-haws about serving wenches, either.

But then, we're grown-ups. How about you?

El Seso Replied:
On the contrary.... I've been playing with the same group for like 14 years now. This stuff comes up often enough OUTSIDE of game, and in ways that would make Dragon Girl run and hide, just never inside. That's why I mentioned that it surprised me.

Oh, okay. Yeah, I was talking from a more "this is what I think it might be in a lot of other groups" rather than "what is happening in my/your group in particular."

Of course, it assumes a lot of things. But in order to make any theory in a social situation, one really needs to make some baseline assumptions.

No worries though, I would imagine that if I knew the people in my group for longer, things like this would start to come up.

LOL!

I wasn't saying that they were held by all women! I was doing a Johnathon Swift's a Modest Proposal approach to make a point when I said it the first time.

Some men don't realize when they do make sexist comments (and some women don't either) but its always a good thing to correct them and put the shoe on the other foot.

I agree that there appears to be a double standard for men and women with sexist jokes, but with the men I've run across....when men make sexist jokes, the men laugh. When women make sexist jokes about men, the men get defensive.

I only make sexist jokes in response to any made by a man :D Again, I just love a Modest Proposal by Johnathon Swift, if you haven't read it, it is a must read for those of you who have sarcastic bent of mind!

I would say lighten up, guys. :p

She made a joke. I often think with more than my member, so I'm not offended. :)

Yeesh, talk about sensitivity. Someone makes a "typical male" joke, and we're all over her.

Awwww....did someone damage your pwecious widdle ego? ;)

(Note: All above is a joke, and should not be taken seriously in the slightest. I'm laughing on the outside, and crying on the inside? :D)

I think her point was sound, even if her delivery was not entirely PC. That is, some who feels it's OK to make any kind of jab or derogatory comment because "it's a joke," and accuses anyone who objects to their comments as being uptight and humorless, should be prepared to accept that same behavior when they're the ones on the receiving end.

Do people really play in games where the detailed off-hours behavior of the adventurers gets into more detail then "We blow our treasure at the local whorehouse, then in the morning we head to that meeting with the Baron"?

Thinking about it, the only time a major in-game reference to sex has come up in the D&D game I'm in was when our group learned about part of an old legend. We know that one particular demigod had been surprised and slain by another demigod (evil). What we didn't know--and stumbled upon, during some planar adventures--was that at the time, the slain demigod had been in an "amorous embrace" with another powerful being, an ally of our party.

The DM didn't describe the encounter in any detail. All of the PCs had different reactions to it, from "Ha! Good for him!" to complete and utter embarassment and mortification.
