SG1, scientists, and automatic weapons

Had some trouble locating this thread. Did it get moved again? Wasn't it in the media lounge?

No, I posted it in the wrong forum accidentally. As soon as I noticed it was in the wrong place I reported it myself in the hopes that it would get moved, but either nobody with permission to move it noticed or it's not possible to move threads anymore (I seem to recall a while ago that mods were having problems moving threads when we moved to the new forum software).

"He's not much use if he can't fend for himself in a firefight"? Aw, c'mon. He's been plenty useful on missions without firing a shot. He and Carter are the brains of the outfit. Having said that, it is odd that Jackson was originally brought in for his expertise in linguistics, but it turns out this is another one of those sci-fi shows where every alien inexplicably speaks English.

Oh, of course, he's there to Figure Things Out (soft sciences stuff is his area, hard stuff with math in it is Carter), and he's certainly not one of the fighter-types, but at least his knowing which way to point a gun and how to use it can save everyone's lives. (And then, once he does start picking it up, Jack shows him how to do it properly so he doesn't get shot in the back accidentally).

Though really the zat is more his style, since it's (a) a one-shot takedown and (b) not necessarily lethal.

"It's not that hard to learn to shoot a gun"? Well, you can certainly just point in the general direction of an enemy and pull the trigger, but let's not sell marksmanship skill short.

I was shooting guns at 8 when my brother was taking a 4h gun safety class, and outshooting my brother. It's not hard to do decently. That's the entire point of guns, really. It's far easier to learn how to use one correctly and well than it is, say, a longbow.
