Shadow Writing
Illusion (Shadow)
Level: Brd 1, Sor/Wiz 1
Components: S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Special; see text
Target: One touched object with a writable surface of up to 3 sq. ft.
Duration: One hour/level (maximum 5 hours) (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
Writing appears on the surface of the touched object as the caster wills them. Any words appear in the caster's handwriting or any handwriting that the caster can actually attempt physically (ie - forgery [with the appropriate skill check], attempted child's writing, etc.). The caster must be literate in the language written. Drawings can also be formed but can only be to the detail that the caster could physically create. All writings appear to be made using the material component used when casting the spell. While the spell itself lasts for hours, the individual bits of writing will only last for up to one minute or when the caster wills it away, whichever comes first. As with all things written, appropriate light must be present for the message to be seen and read.
This spell cannot transcribe any magical writing, nor may any magical glyphs, sigils or symbols be written. It automatically fails if the target is intelligent.
This spell only effects the caster and cannot be cast on another person. For each casting, the caster may only designate one writing surface on which to use this spell.
Material Component: A piece of chalk or charcoal, or dab of fresh ink, or other writing substance; the material used must be appropriate for the substance being written on (ie - chalk/charcoal for wood or stone, ink for parchment, etc.)
Specifics:
In our campaign, we have a mute spellcaster who cannot speak. This spell, along with others, is intended to allow him to communicate with others easily. He usually uses standard methods (paper and pen, personal chalkboard), but they don't help at a range. The character would use this spell to basically write on the wall, so to speak, to communicate with another. For example, he might help coordinate with a friend in jail how the party plans to break him out, but because the words disappear, the passing guard won't read them on his rounds.
Opinions, please! Does this look balanced?
