Shadowrun Returns Video Game

There is a new trailer up for Shadowrun Returns, the upcoming tactical strategy video game. It's looking good from my perspective, and I can't wait to try it out.

The new trailer also gives a nice setup introduction which could be used even for the roleplaying game, giving a nice concise synopsis of the world and the classes that run in it. Although the game is set 2054 instead of the more recent edition's timelines.

As a backer I'm pretty disappointed by what I've seen of the game. It's dumb down for the tablets (no permanent bodies because of them as admitted by the developers) and doesn't have much to do with the PnP game mechanically. It's closer to what the fans of the old nintendo game wanted than the real shadowrun. Also they said that the game was going to be without DRM but if you choose that option yuo can't have ANY expansion or DLC. I've backed many kickstaters and this is the first time that I really hope I could get my money back. It's a shame.

I can see how kickstarter backers can be annoyed/upset regarding the no DRM and being left behind on further updates/patches. I have a pretty large Steam library, so that doesn't bother me, and I'll probably pick it up via Steam, I'm just trying to decide if I want to wait for reviews. I really like Tactical Strategy games like this, so I hope it can deliver.

And realistically, many games don't transfer over in the ways some would hope. I do remember having a great time with the old SNES Shadowrun game, and if they are taking the Framework of Shadowrun and apply enough familiar territory to the game like the old Baldur's Gate and Torment games did, I think it'll be fine. I'll probably be happy with the results myself.

Personally, it's what I've always wanted out of a SR game. I grew up playing computer games, and one of my favorites in high school was a game called Breach, where you played a group of space marines battling aliens, robots, and other space marines. It was a turn based tactical combat game with a scenario editor, very similar to this, only this has much better graphics.

And in the 6-7 or so years I played PnP shadowrun (from 1e until 3e came out), I can't remember many cases where the body of someone mattered after they were killed. I seem to recall a case of keeping a door open.

I am irked about the Steam bit, though. I despise Steam and everything it stands for (but that's another thread).

So is this available for the iPad? I'd love to have it on my tablet, alongside Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic.

At the moment it's PC/Mac/Linux only from what I've seen on their website.
Although it looks like eventually they'll be porting it to iPhone and Android devices.

The PC version (probably includes Mac and Linux) has a map editor, which from watching some
youtube vids of it, would be difficult to implement on mobile devices.

When the question was asked of their twitter account @WeBeHarebrained they answered on July 25:

"Should be in the next few weeks. Held it back to make it better. Thanks for your patience!"

My big disappointment was the lack of weapons mods and the hinky Essence bit. If you hit Essence 1 then you could upgrade to Alphaware. If you had a Predator II pistol you couldn't buy a smartlink.

Really hurt the game.

Oh, and the campaign was kind of short.

I think there is already a mod out there for more weapons.

Lets see how the Berlin Campaign will be. The developers said that the original campaign was supposed to mirror the original SNES game and thus it is linear.
The Berlin campaign is inspired by the Genesis game and supposed to be non linear.
