Shakespeare Under the Radar

So, back on December 29th, a movie quietly went into limited release.

William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, with Al Pacino starring as Shylock. The Cast also includes Jeremy Irons and Joseph Fiennes.

I can understand the limited release, but a little more effort to get people to know about it would go a loooong way.

Quietly? Really? Not a word I would have used. I've been seeing stuff about it on numerous channels. Maybe it's directed at a European demographic? :uhoh:

I can imagine few things more painful than Pacino doing Shakespeare.

:D That's what I'd been expecting since I heard he'd been cast for Shylock, but some of the reviews say good things about him in the movie. I've been sitting and waiting for it to get to Philly ever since it came out, but it doesn't look like it.

On BBC World they said it was the role Pacino was born to play and called it the best cinematic version of the story. I've come to trust the BBC World movie reviews and am looking forward to seeing it.

Actually, Pacino has done quite a bit of Shakespeare. He got rave reviews for his rendition of Richard III about 5 or 6 years ago.

I wasn't crazy about Looking For Richard, actually, but I think he's a GREAT choice for Shylock. The trailers for A Merchant have been pretty obnoxious, but oh well.

I first read this as William Shatner's Merchant of Venice. :\

I would SO be up for that.
