Shatter spell

I tend to agree that it is the former, as there is no specific mention of cloth or paper being resistant to sonic attacks.

I was thinking of rope. It would be a good way to send someone climbing a wall plummeting downward.

I agree. Just remember that if someone's climbing it, then the rope becomes an attended object.

Not to get too particular

I think "solid" in this case is the wrong choice of words by WotC. In reality, there is nothing in rope to shatter, so it would have no effect. Crystal, gems, and and other material that has some kind of rigid, fixed molecular structure could be shattered. Glass, though it is an amorphous solid, could also be "shattered" with the spell. The PHB does leave this spell open to interpretation, with common sense as your guide. In my previous campaigns I only allowed hard crystaline material to be shattered. Of course I had found a cantrip that allowed a rope to be cut (with a touch attack added for 3E) so my mage could do this same thing with a simple spell. Hope this helps.

I have to agree with thorimar on this one. I mean, just think of the word....SHATTER.

A rope can never be shattered - it can be unwound, torn, burnt, even animated, but not shattered.

I would just say apply the word sensibly - if the object can be shattered and fits within the weight limit of the spell, then go ahead with it!

Bah, semantics ;)

Allowing only hard objects would prevent the loud sound created from destroying cloth or paper. Anyone who has ever turned a speaker up too loud knows that loud noises can destroy non-crystalline objects.

I personally would consider a taut rope (IE; one with weight on it) "solid" for the purposes of the spell, but otherwise I wouldn't allow soft objects to burst from it.

However, it's always more fun to blast whatever the rope's attached to than to blast the rope itself. The grapple on the end is iron metal, so you could certainly Shatter it!

But if you're a third level caster, you may not be able to break that iron grappling hook. And if the rope is just tied to something big and sturdy, you definitely won't be able to break it.
