What sorts of items can this spell affect? It says "solid" but does that mean solid as in "non-gaseous, non-liquid" or soild as in "fixed in form"?

A rope can never be shattered - it can be unwound, torn, burnt, even animated, but not shattered.
I would just say apply the word sensibly - if the object can be shattered and fits within the weight limit of the spell, then go ahead with it!
thorimar said:I think "solid" in this case is the wrong choice of words by WotC. In reality, there is nothing in rope to shatter, so it would have no effect. Crystal, gems, and and other material that has some kind of rigid, fixed molecular structure could be shattered. Glass, though it is an amorphous solid, could also be "shattered" with the spell. The PHB does leave this spell open to interpretation, with common sense as your guide. In my previous campaigns I only allowed hard crystaline material to be shattered. Of course I had found a cantrip that allowed a rope to be cut (with a touch attack added for 3E) so my mage could do this same thing with a simple spell. Hope this helps.
