Shield-combo question

I've got a question.

A mage can cast Shield]/i] to gain one-half cover from one side.

Can he then cast a second Shield to gain one-half cover from another side, say, his back?

I would say that this is a DM's call, since they are two different effects, so the stacking-rule with "the higher is used" as in Bulls Strength. It would be like using two Summon Monsters spells, and if I recall correctly, the "stack".

If someone tried to claim the Shield bonus to AC twice because the Shields overlapped, I'd have a problem with that. That is already covered by the rules on stacking bonuses of the same type.

In your example, though, they each covered a seperate 1/2 of the battlefield. IMHO, no problem.

Personally, though, I don't see the point in burning two spells - and more importantly, two actions - to achieve this effect. Then again I usually like to use movement and scenery to provide my cover.

If I say it like this...

Our rouge and the rest of the party members were trying to flank him. Can you spell sneak attack

You cannot cast two shields. Either it's in the PHB spell description (SRD does not say something about it) or in the FAQ.

Shield is not "Effect: One Magical Disk of Force", it's "Target: Personal".

When you cast the spell, you become "a person with a Shield spell".

If you cast it a second time, all you really do is extend the duration and give yourself some buffer against dispels. The second spell tries to make you "a Shielded person", but you already are "a Shielded person", so it doesn't really have an effect.

This is covered in the Main FAQ.
