Shield spell house rule?

Shield spell seems a bit too good for a 1st lvl spell.

Has anyone toned it down at all for thier game. I'd like it to still be 1st level, but what should I do with the effect?

you could lower it like crothian said (+5?) ... or make it lvl dependent ... same as MM?

+3 (lvls 1-2)
+4 (lvls 3-4)
+5 (lvls 5-6)
+6 (lvls 7-8)
+7 (lvls 9+)

just a thought.

What I do is treat it like the dodge feat - The invisible disc interposes itself between the wizard and one particular foe, so it gives the +7 cover bonus against that one foe (no matter how much that foe moves). The wizard can reassign it to a different foe as a free action on his turn.

Simply and has worked well so far.

This method means that you don't have to worry about facing (which the book version foolishly re-introduces), and it is a useful option if the wizard really wants protection against the big nasty rather than his underlings.

Cheers

I use the D&DFAQ version, i.e. +7 cover bonus to AC but no bonus to Reflex saves and does not protect from AoOs like real cover does.
