Shielding an archer

The shield guy sits behind the tower shield in full cover while the archers probably get 3/4 cover. Check the cover rules in the PHB, they explain somewhere how you can have cover yourself without suffering under the drawbacks yourself.

I have planned my next encounter to have low level human fighters that carry tower shields and protect the archers behind them. I more or less planned to have the archer's ready to shoot. the shield men then move shields aside which triggers the archers ready action then they move the sheilds back.

Of course I am hoping the other things on the feild will be perceived as a greater threat allowing this to continue for a few rounds before the characters ready their own actions for the shields to come down.

Also if the characters close the shield men bull rush with the tower shields and allow the archers a few rounds of fire more.

The archers are also my anti mage/cleric group since both tend to fly around as soon as teh battle breaks out.

And yes they are designed to take out the PC's they have been studying them for months.
