Shifter? How?

Well, the question is: in your opinion which is the best way to go Shifter, assuming to take the PrC asap?

Maybe the Druid / Cleric path (with the Spell domain from FRCS to take Anyspell to prepare Alter Self, and thus meet the req.), that offers better BAB, HP (very important) and casting in armor (with the Wild magical quality)?

Or the Wizard / Sorcerer path, that lets you have some awesome spells like Shield or Displacement, or Mirror Image, and tons of skill points (to spend in Knowledge: what you want and thus have a better reason to wildshape into almost anything), at the cost of worse BAB and less HP?

Thnx in advance for your help...

Fastest is the Druid, the reason is that the alter self spell does not allow you to meet the requirements, the phrase is:

Special: Alternate Form--ust[sic] either know polymorph self or have a natural alternate form, alter self, polymorph self, shapechange, or wild shape ability.

The only spell mentioned is polymorph self everything else is an ability. As such you would have to be a 7th level wizard, or an 8th level sorcerer. But 5th level is when the druid gets wild shape. If you really don't want to be a druid you could try and get your DM to let you play the ECL +1 shapechangers in Oriental adventures (I forget the race name) in which case you could qualify at 6th level of any spellcasting class.

Another alternative is to be a 12th level ranger, though you cannot get to 10th level shifter by this tactic.

Assuming one uses manifester in place of spellcaster... 8th level Psion (Egoist); 9th level Psion (non-Egoist); 10th level Psychic Warrior -- all can manifest Polymorph Self if they take it as their first available 4th level power pick.

edit: Add 12th level Adept to the list.

Minor note: 14th level Ranger to get Polymorph Self, and then only with an 18+ Wisdom.

Take that shapeshifter race from OE, and fighter levels. Imagine having 10 feats with all those new shapes (Ooo... large and in charge with a troll!)

This doesn't work because the Shifter (unlike the Shapeshifter from OA) must be able to cast 3rd level spells. And the shapeshifters in OA are called Hengeyokai.

Well, with a penalty

Actually, you could multi-class. You'd be really powerful, but probably not any more powerful than others of the same level once you start adding it all up. And you might not be able to be a shifter 10 by the time you reach character level 20!
