There was a old Shining South sourcebook that was used to base this one on. Also Elaine's Haluraa novels were probably used as well and Mr. Reid has said he used her web article as well.

there you go - i was about to say the tasloi were at least as old as 1982. ;)

Yep, you had Xvarts and Taslois, and Gnolls and Kobolds, but no Orcs and no Goblins. A deliberate omission, probably.
 

Well, for orcs and goblins, you played Icewind Dale. You couldn't swing a sword without hitting one of the little guys. And in Icewind Dale II, the Goblin Shamans did a happy dance as they hit you with lightning bolts.

I'm sorry, where was I? Oh right, tasloi. Fun little guys. A good sturdy forest humanoid.
