My Norse character will tell you that you should worry about the ravens.
Odin, the All Father, uses ravens as his scouts and spies.

Woe to the person who disses Odin, thinking himself speaking in private, only to be overheard by those ravens. Odin tends to be rather frightful when he gets angry.

Tsk! Tsk! By now you should all know that I am superior to the common person. There should be no need for a poll because it is so obvious. Really ENWorld...

Now, enough banter with the unwashed public, time to return to my plans to destroy the world.

Cats can mentally perform highly-complicated mathematics. How hard can it be for one to get a crit? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

For those interested in seeing cats perform criticals (and fatalities), see the Sluggy Freelance series "Kitten". These commoners don't stand a chance.

The commoner misses the housecat. The housecat bites the commoner! The commoner is killed!

The housecat eats a commoner corpse.

I don't see why this is such a hard idea to swallow - housecats are out there everyday battling rancorous rodents, evil avians, flagitious fish, and cruel canines. Given the experience points they rack up, is it any wonder that they can take your average commoner down without even getting their whiskers dirty?

but seriously, folks...

IMC, I do this:

Every critter, including NPCs and PCs, gets some bonus HP based on race and size.

PCs & NPCs:
Gnomes: 2 HP
Halflings: 4 HP
Elves & other Fey: 6 HP
Humans, Half-Elves, Dwarves & Half-Orcs: 8 HP
ECL +1 Outsiders (Aasimar & Tieflings): 10 HP

General Monsters:

Fey: 6 HP
Outsiders & Elementals: 8 HP
Oozes: per size, in MM
Others: per size:
- Diminuative: 1 HP
- Tiny: 2 HP
- Small: 4 HP
- Medium: 8 HP
- Large: 16 HP
- Huge: 32 HP
... etc.

Then, roll dice for your class level(s) normally. This means that a 1st level Halfling Fighter will probably not be as tough as a 1st level Human Wizard, but it also means that a housecat can't kill a level 1 human easily.

For the DM, you can reduce the HD of your larger monsters without lowering their threat. This means that an ogre can be a CR 2 threat without needing more than two "real" HD -- which makes him vulnerable to Sleep spells and such, unless he has some class levels.
