I'd also point out that if knocking prone was really that big of a deal, then Way of the Hand monks would be even more OP, considering they can knock two targets prone per round, while still dealing regular damage. (well, so long as their Ki points don't run out anyway.)
Let's be honest here too - spamming actions is hardly a new thing in 5e. A fighter without any feats is doing what every round? Pretty much spamming his main weapon attack 99% of the time. So, is adding a potential knock down to the mix really making that much of a difference?
