Shugenja without the Oriental influence

Has anyone found a way to use a Shugenja without the Oriental influence. I am thinking of using them in my campaign world but do not want the oriental.

First look at them makes me want them to be special priests of Elemental gods.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I have a world setting where the oriental classes are standard aspects of the elven culture. Samurai = elvish knights, wu jen = elvish wizards, shugenja = elvish priesthood, etc, etc, etc

I see no reason for someone in your position not to just use them as-is, perhaps changing a few names (including that of the class itself). Heck, I use a slightly modified Shugenja as a full-blown replacement for the Sorcerer class.

Just replace the ofuda with a more standard holy symbol or component pouch.

I use them as-is, and as part of the Favored Gestalt of all Genasi.

I use the class, only called 'Elementalist'. Nothing really needs to change, either (beyond what I change for my house rules in general, that is.)

Exactly, change names and flavor. Mechanics can stay just as they are.

I allow shugenja in my Greyhawk campaign with only roleplaying tweaks. They are called elementalists and they are mainly part of a Baklunish spellcasting tradition. Some of them can also be found worshipping the Elder Elemental Eye as well other gods of the elements, such as Pyremius and the Oeridian Wind Gods. Followers of Obad-Hai have a predilection towards the class as well.

In the Eberron campaign setting, the shugenja are Seren priests that revere the dragons of Argonessen. And Wu Jen are druidic wizards.
