Sigil, planar cities, 4E and older editions

It needs to be asked though: was it omission by accident (or word count) or by design?

It probably wasn't something that came to mind when they wrote up Sigil for 4e. They probably didn't consider the downstream ramifications of what it would mean for a 4e Sigil if things heavily associated with the city previously, but not in the city itself, didn't exist because they had never been a part of the 4e default cosmology. That and the world building aspect of the game doesn't particularly seem to be a priority to be addressed by 4e design.

Sounds like there's a permanent fog or gloom, but not rain per se.

Sounds like they didn't go into the specifics very much. There's nothing there that invalidates anything I said. A frequent gloomy drizzle in many parts of the city is what I meant to imply, not horrible thunderstorms.

To make the Hive "packed to the gills" you'd need to assume that The Lady's Ward or the Clerk's Ward are completely deserted.

WotC has never really done justice to demographics that make sense. The 4e population level for Sigil both doesn't match its 2e details, nor does it particularly make a ton of sense for the 4e city either. Way too light. I'm in agreement with you there.

Not any more. The torus is closed and the dimensions are given on MotP pg. 27. There is no mention of the numbers changing.

This has been covered before.

They don't actually say at any point in the 4e MotP that the city's ring is closed. It has always been open, both in description and in artwork, and the 4e artwork clearly shows an open ring. "Torus" isn't being used in the strict, mathematical solid sense. They even used "torus" in the 2e descriptions at times, and the 4e description was probably dovetailing the same words (and given that I know they read through the 2e material before writing that section, it seems a reasonable assumption).

Sigil seems like one of those places where DMs can put doors to places long forgotten. As well as a place where things long forgotten return to the world... (And probably plan to destroy it for some reason.)
