Silence - Broken? & My House Rule

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before, though I'm having a hard time finding threads on it. Forgive me I'm new on these boards relatively speaking.

Anyway there are certain spells I consider overpowered. A recent problem I see arising is Silence.

It's a 2nd level spell capable of shutting down nearly all spells of a spellcaster, including the use of wands/scrolls etc. The 'Saving Throw - None' for an object makes it far too easy to cast it on a nasty lich (right in front of his head for example) and have it rendered spell-less. People have said before 'But he could just move', sure he could, but what happens when you corner said lich or magic using evil guy in a 20x20 room? It would seem that BBEG spellcasters would fear small spaces and thus have a nasty case of claustrophobia, just in case that pesky 3rd level cleric comes with his Barbarian buddy to wipe him out.

It's an exaggeration, but take it less extreme and say put up 10th level players against an 18th level lich. If they can corner it in a small space, the lich is completely boned (no pun intended). Ok, he can take feats etc to cast Silent spells, but the cleric is using up a 2nd level spell while the lich is wasting a far higher level spell slot, just to get out the way. Of course, the cleric can just cast silence again until the Lich has used up many of his higher level spell slots just to avoid the area.

The wording of the Silence spell is a little ambiguous. I'm going to get flamed here I think, but it's worth it. It says saving throw 'None' for objects, which is fine, but I rule that even though objects don't get saving throws, it doesn't mean creatures don't get their own saves if brought into the area. Just like a fireball cast on an area grants saving throws for all involved, while an unattended object gets no save. I know there's a difference, but I think it helps balance Silence.

I've never seen a problem with Silence. A spellcaster who was truly worried would take Silent Spell feat. Generally though it's just a nice balancer that evens the odds vs higher level spellcasters.

Yes you could take Silent Spell feat, but then what spell would you memorize as Silenced? You might have one spell, say Dispel Magic or Teleport maybe. But that burns away a 4th level or 6th level spell slot for the Clerics 2nd level slot. Then what happens when the cleric casts it a second time? I just don't think it's a fair trade off. And remember this is assuming the evil spellcaster is actually ready for your 3rd level clerics tactics.

Well I thought applying a saving throw would be a little less extreme. If said lich fails his save, then I consider that a fair result. It's the 'Saving throw: None' that bothers me more than anything else to be honest.

None, I'm a sorcerer! :p

Anyways, you know, that you can just move out of the silenced area, yes?

If silence is broken you can hear again...

I know but I was thinking of the situation where you have a spellcaster, say, on a raised platform surrounded by a chasm, or even just a small room with only one exit. It just seems too easy to be able to take out high level spellcasters with this spell if their mobility is limited.

It's extremely easy to take out high-level casters if their mobility is limited and their opponents can cast spells on them without opposition, yes. Casters tend to be highly intelligent creatures and should use the many options that they have not to meet their enemies in such situations.

I'd reduce the spell to Short range, myself, but it plays a useful part in game balance and certainly doesn't deserve banning.

Thanee, you sound just like one of those people who thought 3.0 harm was balanced because "dragons are too clever to let themselves be touched"...

I also think that silence is too powerful. It should certainly allow a will save, since it basically disallows all spellcasting from anyone but a sorcerer (so, druids, clerics, wizards) unless they have fairly unrealistic knowledge or are so high level that they're still powerful if all their spells are Silent.

Changing the spell targeting to "one creature" or "up to X creatures within a 20ft radius burst" would work for me tbh.
