The Iron Hood of the Executioner (occasionally simply called the Pyramid Head, or the Red Pyramid) is an ancient artifact created by an eons-dead god of malice, war, and destruction. It grants almost unbelievable power - At an unimaginable price. The soul and body of he who wears the Iron Hood will inevitably wither and die, leaving the weared damned to a fate unimaginable. It appears as a heavy iron pyramid that fits over the head and shoulders but still allows freedom of movement. It weighs 60 lbs, and the entire surface is stained a lurid red by dried blood and scarring rust that cannot ever be cleansed.

Wearing the Iron Hood of the Executioner offers the following benefits:

Although the Iron Hood covers the eyes completely, the wearer can see as well as if the Hood wasn't there, and is affected as though by a Deathwatch spell while it is worn.

Wearing the Iron Hood lessens a creatures vulnerability to critical hits, but doesn't offer complete protection. When affected by a critical hit, the attacking weapons critical damage modifier is considered to be one less for purposes of bonus critical damage and all magical effects dependent on critical modifier; for example, a rapier will never be considered to land a critical on the wearer of the Hood, and an axe is considered a 20/x2 weapon instead of a 20/x3 weapon.

While wearing the Iron Hood, you can kill with murderous ease. You may make a Coup De Grace against helpless, stunned, dazed, cowering, or disabled creatures, not just helpless ones. Additionally, those killed by such a Coup De Grace cannot be Raised, only Resurrected.

You gain DR 8/- while wearing the Hood.

While wearing the Hood you do not need to sleep, eat or breath, and are immune to fear.

As long as you wear the Hood you gain a +6 Profane bonus to Strength and Armor Class.

Wearing the Iron Hood of the Executioner has the following disadvantages:[/b]

In order to remove the Hood, you must make a Will Save of DC 10 + 5 for every previously attempted save ever + 1 for every hour you've ever worn the Hood. Failure means the Hood has gripped your head, requiring you to make another Will save to attempt to remove it. If you fail three consecutive Will Saves, the Hood has merged with you, devouring you slowly. This connection is beyond the power of any mortal magic to undo, but such a damned soul might linger for months or years, if he pleases the forces that dwell within the hood.

While wearing the Hood, you suffer a -6 Profane penalty to Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.

While wearing the Hood, the wearer cannot speak or cast spells with a verbal component, only emit inhuman moans, grunts, and ululations.

Every full day the wearer goes without killing a sentient creature using a Coup De Grace, they permanently lose one point of wisdom, strength, and constitution beyond the power of all mortal magic to undo due to madness, a deep, soul-sapping fatigue, and a horrible illness that leaves the skin a slick membrane of suppurating sores and pustulating lesions... Upon dying of this consumption, the creature withers in to an empty husk, eventually dissolving in to a pool of corrosive slime that deals 2d6 temporary Wisdom damage with a touch.

Well leaving aside the question that a PC would have to be insane to use it and thus it's essentially just a effect/template for NPCs, it is interesting.

I particularly like the "Reduce Critical Multiplier" ability. That is a very interesting idea, that I don't think I've come across before even though it is fairly obvious in hindsight. It might be worth extracting as some sort of a counterpart for Fortification as an armor modifier or an interim step between immunity to critical hits and normal vulnerability.

Well, to be completely honest, it's not really an original idea. I stole it from a feat in the Kingdoms of Kalamar players guide - Specifically, Iron Touch of the Screwy Hobgoblin Wargod. It has much the same effect. Real potent feat.

To be honest, there are SOME situations where this artifact could be useful for a PC. As you may have noticed, there are no alignment effects on the user, so even a Paladin could use this. When you intend to throw your life away in the first place, what better tool to use in a suicidal attack against pure evil than its own sword?

Also, what's your opinion on the E-Z coup de grace ability?

Well having played Silent Hill 2, you couldn't get me to touch such an artifact unless, I was at the climax of a Kamikaze mission and going to die no matter what I did. Even then I'd have to think twice.

The EZ-Coup De Grace, is okay. Not overwhelmingly powerful considering it's an artifact, but I would be highly reluctant to permit such a feat outside of such an item.
