It should be noted that there's a difference between protecting yourself from [Good], and casting Protection from Good. Good clerics have a myriad of options when it comes to protecting themselves from other good creatures. Sanctuary, Shield of Faith, Magic Vestment, and Anti-life Shell are examples of such, and there are others depending on the cleric's domain.Thia Halmades said:If there's been a gross misunderstanding between a Higher Power and the good-aligned party, Why wouldn't a Good Cleric cast Prot. from Good? Odds of them having it memmed? Admittedly small. But assuming that protecting yourself from Good is automatically evil really nerfs some cool RP options. Should I let the misguided Good creature shred me, because hitting it back is "evil?" Point being, it ain't always that black & white.
Personally, I rationalize it by ruling that Protection from Good invokes a powerful field of evil energy through which good creatures have trouble attacking, just as Protection from Evil creates a barrier of pure good. Wielding evil energy is [Evil], even if it's in self-defense against misguided good foes.
That's my take on it, anyway. It explains the rules well enough for me to suspend disbelief, at least, which is all I ask of my explanations.
