Another vote for Savage Worlds. You can get the core book for $10. The Fantasy Companion(just updated) for $15.
When you're ready for that Zombie game, try War of the Dead.
My group got into Savage Worlds to play WotD and have loved every minute of it.

I don't know Savage Worlds.

I do know FATE thought and would recommend it. Worth checking out www.faterpg.com

The resources section has a load of free downloads - I think version 2 is there, possibly version 3 and lots of links to games which use the FATE mechanics.

Also check out Dungeon World or Apocalypse World. Very simple mechanically, but very satisfying to play.
