Single question about cleric abilities...

At 2nd or 3rd level, clerics get Cure Light Wounds.

It's a daily ability that lets someone use a healing surge. It has a touch range and uses the cleric's standard action for the round. That's... about it.

It's far weaker than Healing Word. Why is this a daily power? I just saw this in Keep on the Shadowfell and assume it's a mistake.

I have a corollary question: a "Cure" tells the recipient to use a healing surge. Does that mean that by whatever means a given character cannot be cured more times in a day than its number of healing surges? Thus, a 1st level Rogue that gets hurt all the time can only recover hit points 7 times per day even if she gets cured 25 times?

Yes.

Everything that restores hit points (Second Wind, healing potions, Lay on Hands, etc) take up healing surges.

Note that the Paladin gives their healing surge to the recipient, but otherwise the recipient loses their healing surge.

"The target regains hit points as if it had spent a healing surge."

As opposed to Healing Word...

"The target can spend a healing surge and regain an additional 1d6 hit points."

With Cure Light Wounds the target doesn't actually use a healing surge, but still gains the benefits of one... It also means the cleric can use it on someone who has already used up all their healing surges for the day.

Well that explains why it's only once per day. This is the first thing I've seen that doesn't require someone's healing surge. Wonder if higher level clerics have more abilities like this?
 


Just to re-iterate.

Cure Light Wounds does not activate a Healing Surge.

It simply heals an amount equal to a healing surge, plus a small modifier dependant bonus.
 

Further, cure light wounds can be used in the same round as healing word.

But the final word, CLW is a utility power, it is not in the same power ballgame as healing word is.

I would imagine so, given that this is cure light wounds. I imagine that a higher level cleric (level 10, let's say) could have CLW (lvl 2 utility), CMW (lvl 6 utility) and CSW (lvl 10 utility). That's three surge free heals per day, plus whatever bonus the higher level prayers will throw in. Being that CLW does scale with the healing surge value, CMW and CSW would have to have either a much larger healing amount (surge x2 and surge x3?) or some very good benefit outside of it.

Then again I could be completely wrong and CMW and CSW may not be in the game. However, if that's the case it seems very strange to call the level 2 power Cure Light Wounds. *shrug*

I find it interesting that a "light" wound is anything up to 1/4 your maximum hp. 4E PCs really are John McClane. ;)
