Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Bannock stands at the balcony for a long moment, transfixed by the sight of battle. He cheers for his countrymen and silently wishes he was there, winning glory for his home.

Suddenly, impulsed, he turns to Alric,

"You! The Elf said you are one of them! Look at what your people do! If these Elves hate them so, maybe I should be their friend, for we share common foes. Why is a soldier from Ragesia here now with us?!"

Alric stares out at the carnage, fire and death that blankets the city that has been his home for the past few years. Undirected fury continues to blacken his face from Larion's insults. Slowly, the fury melts away into what seems to be a sadness locked behind his green eyes, as he realizes its not the elf's insults that hurt so much as... something else...

At Bannock's demand, he turns and faces the huge blacksmith meeting his eyes, with the sadness in his eyes almost palatable. Yet his jaw remains clenched in stalwart resolution. He looks tired, yet only a moment ago he looked ready to face an army with nothing more than his sword and shield.

"I.... I am no soldier of Ragesia any longer. And I am here... because I have no where else to go."

Suddenly, he collects himself, the sadness giving way to resolution. There is no fury, there is no detectable emotion, and now this exile of Ragesia stands before Bannock as if he has nothing to answer for.

"Do what you wish, Bannock Voss of Gate's Pass. I have my own purpose and it is not for" his eyes briefly gesture across the city to the mass of the Ragesian army now laying siege as if singling out a single person out there, "them. For now I fight with you."

Leaving Alric and Bannock to discuss their issues, Torrent heads upstairs in search of the gnome.

She returns a few minutes later carrying a hideous gnome in blue robes. He is unconscious, likely due to the large red welt on his head, and his hands are tied behind his back. Torrent sets him down by a locker, waves Hrimr over to assist, and begins to unbind his wrists and tend his wounds.

"Hrimr and I should have him on his feet in a few moments. There are a few dwarven guards bound and unconscious upstairs, and a half-orc guard whose face had been completely burned away, but we don't really have time to help them. We need to find that case and get out of this city."

Bannock's mind races, confused. He passionately wants to do something to avenge the injustice thrust upon the city. He takes a step at Alric,

"You... I should... Grahh!"

He stops, thinks of their situation, thinks of his father, wondering if he made it back to the city, and if he is even still alive. He sighs. Their shop is, or was, near the ravaged west gate. It begins to sink in that his life is changing forever.

His grip on his glaive shaft tightens as he again imagines doing violence on the Ragesian in front of him, but then his blood cools and the feeling passes and his innate kindness prevails. He is still too young to have lost his trusting nature.

"I guess I've no place else to go anymore either. I watched you kill a man to protect us, and you helped us save that woman. I want to kill Ragesians, but you say you aren't one of them any more, and I suppose, you must have done something to hurt them to get yourself banished."

He steps before Alric and extends an open hand.

"Swear before me that you intend no harm to us or this city, and let us have a pact."

Lars bounds up the stairs and squeezes past the elves. He enters the room above and joins Torrent and Hrimr as they attend the injured gnome.
"That's a nasty welt. I had a friend who lost his wits after being hit like that. Can you fix him up?"

Hrimr heads over to where Torrent is holding the Gnome.

"That's quite the nasty bump he has there. Let me see what I can do to help."

After having a look at the Gnome Hrimr begins to rummage through his bag for some smelling salts to try and rouse the Gnome.

"Torrent, did you at least unbind a few of the Dwarves upstairs? They may be able to give us some information concerning who was working with the Elf. I have a feeling the Ragesians may have tried to kill two birds with one stone but trying to get us to kill each other"

"We should be able to fix him up Lars. Looks like he took the hilt of a sword to his skull or something."

Torrent merely shrugs at the dwarf's questions: "I know you're probably concerned for your fellow dwarves, but frankly, we don't have time to wake them up, tend to their wounds and coax information out of them. By the abyss, they may even call out for their friends outside and that would leave us in a dill of a pickle. Lets just get Rivereye up and ready to talk."

Hrimr, you're able to revive the gnome who comes to rather frantically, clawing in front of him as if reliving his last cognizant moments. When he realizes he is not under attack, he mellows and takes in his new surroundings.

"Who are you? What happened to those elves? Are you friends of Peppin? Oh I do hope my friend is alright. He was supposed to meet me here ... oh ... I suppose I shouldn't say anymore. Who did you say you were again?"

Arnir scratches at the stubble on his chin as he regards Kirio and Larion. He pulls out his flask of fine spirit and takes a sip, then offers some to the other Elves.

[sblock="Elven"]"Shealis, hmm? I know of her...she is an instructor at Gabal's, is she not?...Quite beautiful. And skilled. I always wondered what an Elf of her skill was doing in such a dead-end town. It makes sense that Shahalesti would want one of their own in Gate Pass...

In any event, Kirio is right. Our party wants to see the Ragesians turned away, as do you, and I simply want out of this city. The Ragesian among us will either assist us all in this task and prove his allegiance concretely, or attempt to betray us...at which point we can kill him. As I said, I'll not let anyone get in the way of my departure from this hell, and if your Mistress can help us, I'd gladly speak with her. Working together would be far more pleasurable than, say, tying you up and letting the Ragesians find you, yes?"[/sblock]

Hrimr nods with reluctant acceptance as he works on rousing the Gnome

"I understand Torrent, the needs of the many and all that. I just hate to see my kinsmen in such a state."

After the Gnome wakens and calms down Hrimr begins to answer his questions:

"Rivereye, we were friends of Peppin. He met an untimely fate I'm afraid. We are here to continue his work and hurt those who would harm Gatepass and our friends."

Kirio hears the exchange between Alric and Bannock and smirks looking a little disgusted "vewla... Irysillla ilma lae... aseaneelilc. Laytytyelaa ela irilla ane a'tyanyan ean eo aniras, aniraa mailcca ilma cena nyirecwmal amiral aey anireln ilfeyan ean"

[sblock="if you speak elven]"gods... Humans are so... emotional. Suppose one has to expect it of them, they really are like children when you think about it""I'm with Arnir, I want out. You're right about the flute, I'm from Calanis and that is where it was made for me, if you are verry lucky I may be convinced to play it for you, and tell you more, but not now I think. If seeing this lady will get me out I am willing to talk to her, but only if it gets me out. She presumably has what you came here to get however, so unless she can get us out of the city, I see little need for it? If we help each other can you ensure our safe departure? Let's discuss this with Torrent and the others, your compatriots now have what she and hers were seeking"
"before you object, I know the organization this priestess works for, I've fought with them before, and they fight Ragesia, so hear her out!"

[/sblock]

Kirio pops his head into the upstais chamber, shudders a bit as he sees the now conscious gnome "ugh... gnomes, disgusting" he cannot help but murmur to himself

"Gentlemen, Torrent, we have to talk. Larion's compatriots have got what we came here to get, and have taken it from here. He says he's willing to take us to his master, Shealis,
an instructor at Gabal's
apparently, and a powerful one, we could make a case for them to share the inteligence, says rivereye here can confirm things." He looks at the gnome "What of it man, is what he says true, they took it? She will be needing a password to access those files, and we may be able to bargain somehow."

"We still need to see
Mr. Menash or whatever his name is for papers however, and we are wasting time here." He looks at the gathered humans "Might I suggest we move more directly next time we have a something to do..., seems to me things would be much simpler had we arrived a little earlier, yes? There is a red Dragon in the skies, fire is raining down on this city, and WE ... NEEED ... TO ... LEAVE!"

He smiles a little embarassed
"Forgive my outburst, just a littel jittery. I say we seek out this Menash fellow now for the papers, and only then consider seeing this
Shealis if it is absolutely necesary."
